Scholarly Workflow: Federal Prototype and Preprints
Jeffrey Spies COS | SHARE | UVA @jeffspies
3
History Comprehensive across publications
Automatically relate funding data and accepted manuscripts Automatically collect manuscripts and complete metadata Automatically route manuscripts and metadata
4
Approach Incremental Break down the problem into consumables
5
Problem Policies are not operationalized and/or harmonized
6
Requirements A user deposits a manuscript and metadata
Who is the user? What is meant by manuscript? What version? What if the user doesn’t have license to distribute the document, i.e., they don’t have copyright? What if the paper is embargoed? What is the document format? Does the metadata have a schema? Does the user have this information? …
7
The perceived efficacy of the policy will depend on the efficacy of the workflow/service that implements it, and this policy is important.
8
Approach Incremental Develop responsively
Break down the problem into consumables Develop responsively Fail fast, learn, iterate
9
Prototype Create something tangible to discuss against
Low risk, high reward
10
Approach Incremental Develop responsively Think about workflow

I have to, but not really, right?
Write Report New Service Publish Report
25
It’s worth it. Write Report New Service Publish Report
Or, if I don’t do it, I won’t get funding

It’s more worth it. Write Report New Service Publish Report

Adam summers This is a 3d renderer—anyone can create renderers, by the way, very easy—modular system. Just write a bit of python or javascript code to do conversion and submit the module on github.
37
These are modules that you can add to the OSF.
We’ve abstracted the APIs of these storage services to upload, download, get metadata, authenticate, and authorize. Now you can drag and drop to any of 8 storage services (including OSF)
