Problems with Current Image Search Engines
Heavily relies on file names / tagging 1 2 Hard to find similar images Our image search engine is different from current image search engines, which are heavily based on file names or user tagging. Based on image’s content, our image search engine will overcome the following problems: 1. Almost no one labels the image. 2. Most image tagging software do not use controlled vocabulary but allow free-form. 3. Point-and-shoot cameras give images generic file names 4. What if what I’m looking for is not the subject of the image? 5. What if I want to look for similar images? Moreover, our image search engine enables efficient management and further disposal of a lot of images, therefore paves the way for a large scale business application. 3 Desired image is within another image 4 Hard to organize photos efficiently

Why Isn’t Google Enough?
We do not get what we really want! Why and How do we recognize this opportunity? Personal experience— If we input “candy” in Google, we do not always get the image related to candy. If I type in “Tiger” I get Tiger Woods on the front page as well as a “Tiger Cheerleading Team.” “Tiger” is a word in the file name and the images were from sites with a large page rank. I found the perfect image of a flower I wanted but it was in the background of an image of a barn. I have a picture of an insect but have no idea what it is. 2. Business investigation— Hospital need such technology to recognize cancers and other syndromes. Scholars need such technology to facilitate their research. Industries need such technology to facilitate their operations, for example, car rental firms need to use it to recognize their cars and manage their car database. Government need such technology to recognize criminals, etc.
