Results from Phase I - I Although the wind turbines produced 50% above anticipated production (compared to estimate by independent consultant) and both solar PV panel and battery capacity were dimensioned to cover more than the daily consumption, there is still a considerable use of the diesel generators. The consumption of diesel has fallen from 150 to 50 liters per day thanks to the new hybrid system, but we believe there is significant additional saving potential by optimizing the system as a whole. In particular, we suggest the following actions to be made: Parameters 235 in the SMA sunny island grid forming inverter should be adjusted to lithium batteries, meaning that we have the genset only starting when batteries reach 22 % of SOC and auto shut down for the genset when they have reached 33 % of SOC. Actual parameters which are factory setting are 40 % (start) and 80 % (stop). In this way the genset will be only used to a minimum, giving priority to wind and sun for charging the batteries. Avoid using the diesel generator when there is enough wind resource and/or solar resource, because these two sources of energy act as "slaves" under the diesel generator. In other words, if the diesel generator operates, the wind and solar will discontinue feeding electricity into the micro grid even if there is wind and/or sun.

Results from Phase I - II
To analyze and understand this problem and its root-cause, we organized a microgrid seminar in Sweden which was attended by chief engineers from CEB's operation and maintenance branch. The system optimization will be made by end of April 2017 and we hope to get down to an average diesel consumption below 5 liters per day, saving extra liters of diesel per year. This is equivalent to 65 tons of CO2 emissions reduction per year and an additional cost saving of USD per year. Compared to the old solution running only on old diesel generator that had an average consumption of 150 liters of diesel per day, the annual saving will be USD per year (excl. the cost saving in diesel genset maintenance) and to the total CO2 emission reduction of 137 Tons CO2 per year. This Calculation is for an island with less than 500 people! Imagine the IMPACT OF MAKING ALL MICROGRIDS SMART!
