9 Probability www.mathsrevision.com Calculating Ratio Probability
One way of thinking about Probability is as a ratio Chance of an event happening is 1 in P(Event) = the number of favourable events compared to the total number of events. 12-May-18 Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

Probability Calculating Probability Probability can be thought of as a simple fraction or decimal. It always lies between 0 and 1. 0 meaning impossible ( could not happen) 1 meaning certain ( will definitely happen) 12-May-18 Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

Probability Calculating Ratio Probability Example : What is the chance of getting a 4 when rolling a dice. The number of favourable events is 1 The number of total events is (1,2,3,4,5,6,) So probability is P(4) = 1 in 6 chance 12-May-18 Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

Probability Calculating Ratio Probability Example : What is the chance of getting an odd when rolling a dice. The number of favourable events is 3 (1,3,5) The number of total events is (1,2,3,4,5,6,) So probability is P(odd) = 3 in 6 chance Simplify HCF = 3 P(odd) = ½ P(odd) = 1 in 2 chance 12-May-18 Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

Probability Calculating Probability Example : A boy tossed a coin. What is the probability that it is heads. Example : There are 3 red and 4 green balls in a bag. What is the probability a green ball is picked. 12-May-18 Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.
