Cold War Began after WWII and lasted into late 1980s
Was between United States and Russia (AKK- Soviet Union, USSR) Was a “NON-Fighting War” between these two countries but they “backed” other countries who fought each other (Vietnam & Korea) Was Really about Communism vs. Democracy

Containment policies were a series of policies stating that it was our DEMOCRATIC duty to protect the world from the spread communism result of the “Domino Theory” that once nations start to fall (to communism)., neighboring nations would fall as well (like a bunch of dominoes standing up in a line. When one falls they all fall

Marshall Plan created by the United States after WWII as a plan for funding the rebuilding of Europe. wanted to give Money and help to any country that would be friends with the United States and change to a Democracy. (Remember : Marshall = More)

Truman Doctrine was a United States containment policy after WWII – containing communism by sending assistance to weak nations vulnerable to communist takeover. Remember …T – Truman – Two- Turkey and Greece (Remember : Truman – Two- Turkey and Greece)

Korean War A Chinese Revolution that resulted in China becoming a communist country. This threatened the rest of her neighbors in Asia. Korea is next door to China Communism spread to the northern part of Korea while the southern part of Korea wanted to remain democratic. China backed North Korea in the idea of Communism while South Korea resisted communism and was supported by the U.S. North and South Korea are still divided today.

“McCarthyism” was the name given to the effects of the second Red Scare Senator McCarthy’s conducted a witch hunt for communists in the U.S. government in the 1950s. McCarthy rose to power by feeding American fears that communism was infiltrating our government.

Cuban Revolution in 1959 Fidel Castro overthrew a government that was friendly with the USA. Castro became the communist dictator of Cuba. Castro disliked the USA and any Democratic ideas. He wanted to be dictator (sole ruler like a king) of Cuba

Bay of Pigs Invasion Happened in 1961 while JFK was pres.
Many people who had to flee Cuba when Castro took over wanted to take Cuba back. USA helped train them as a fighting unit and supplied guns and ammo but US Troops did not actively participate The invasion was unsuccessful and lots of people died in the attempt. Castro blamed the USA and invited Russia (USA main enemy) to put nuclear missiles there in Cuba.

Cuban Missile Crisis confrontation between the United States, the Soviet Union, and Cuba in 1961 generally regarded as the moment in which the Cold War came closest to a nuclear war. USSR had warships taking missiles to Cuba Missiles were capable of reaching the U.S. US Warships met Soviet (Russian) warships in Atlantic ocean and made them turn around and go home. The was where STUDENTS and those who were AGAINST the WAR protested the U.S. being in VIETNAM. Most thought being in the WAR was pointless and that the U.S. GOV’T was just KILLING soldiers and not making any PROGRESS. Big movement on college campuses Part of the Hippie Movement US National Guard killed 4 college student on Kent State Campus in an Anti-Vietnam Protest
