2 The Element of Color Properties: HUE: Spectral color name (Red)
VALUE: The lightness or darkness INTENSITY: Brightness or dullness of a color

3 THE COLOR WHEEL Invented by Sir Isaac Newton

4 Primary Colors The 3 pigment colors that cannot be mixed or formed by any other color combinations All other colors are derived from these hues RED, BLUE and YELLOW

5 Secondary Colors These are the colors that are formed when mixing the primary colors with each other RED + YELLOW = ORANGE RED + BLUE = VIOLET BLUE + YELLOW = GREEN There are located between the 2 primary colors that are being mixed

6 Tertiary Colors These are the colors formed by mixing a primary and a secondary color. That's why the hue is a two word name, such as blue-green, red-violet, and yellow-orange.

7 Tints and Shades Tints: white + color Shade: color + black

8 Color Context The same color appears differently when paired with different colors.

9 Complementary Colors 2 colors that are across from one another on the color wheel When mixed together they create brown Adding a complement decreases the intensity of the color

10 Analogous Colors 3 or more colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. Ex: Red, red-violet, violet, blue-violet.

11 Triadic Colors 3 colors that are evenly spaced around the color wheel and create a triangle Ex. Red, Blue, Yellow YO, BG, RV

12 MONOCHROMATIC Color scheme using just one color in different values (tints and shades Tint: Color + White Shade: Color + Black

13 Split Complementary In addition to the base color, it uses the two colors adjacent (next to) to its complement. Ex. Green, red -violet, red-orange
