1 Welcome to Sci-Fi and Fantasy with Mr. Short.
Please find your seat by looking at the chart on the desk at the front of the room

2 Notebook Item #1 Notebook Items are a chance for you to transition into the right mindset for the day’s class. Prompt responses should be about a half-page long to receive full credit. You might not always answer each question, but make sure to address a majority of them and write close to a half-page. You should be writing for 7-10 minutes minimum without talking. We will typically discuss after everyone has had an adequate amount of time to think and respond. How did you end up in this class? What are some expectations you have? Why is important to read, view, and think about Sci-Fi and Fantasy? What is your favorite work in either genre? What is something you have been wanting to read that fits into one of these categories?

Name at least one piece of technology predicted by Sci-Fi lit? What was something you learned from this Ted Talk? What something you liked? Was there something you particularly agreed or disagreed with? What big questions did this video make you think about or answer for you?

What is a/the potential problem or fallout if this could become possible. What big questions did this video make you think about or answer for you?

18 Notebook Item #12 The Veldt Pre-Reading Activity-Complete the following survey in your notebooks on your own, without discussion.  For each statement write a sentence or two explaining why you agree or disagree with the statement. For one that you feel most passionate about, write a paragraph explaining why you agree or disagree. 1. Technological advancements make life better for everyone. 2. It is important for adults to monitor a child’s interactions with technology. 3. It is dangerous to put too much faith in technology. 4. Children/young adults who watch too much T.V./play too many violent videogames become desensitized to real-life violence. 5. Technology has led to the breakdown of families. 6. Those who worry about the negative effects of technology should think about the modern conveniences it brings. 7. Adults too often use a form of technology (T.V., movies, videogames, computer, etc.) as a babysitter for their children. 8. It is possible to become addicted to technology.
