What is X? What is Pre-Trip Inspection Standard Work? Pre/Post Trip inspections are required to be completed daily. As a driver of a commercial motor vehicle, it is your responsibility to ensure your vehicle is in safe operating condition prior to your departure. Any deficiencies identified during the inspection process must be documented on the Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) and brought to the attention of management. Review the information on this slide. It is super important and reinforces they are responsible for the condition of their vehicles. Same with next slide.

The Pre-Trip Inspection Standard Work
What is X? The Pre-Trip Inspection Standard Work A Pre-Trip Inspection must be completed prior to your departure from the DC. This process allows you to identify any safety sensitive defects and correct them prior to placing the vehicle into service for the day. You will need to turn in this completed Pre-Trip Inspection SW form daily prior to receiving your phone & paperwork. The form will include your sign-off… Driver Name: Driver Signature: Date: Truck Number: Reviewer Name: Reviewer Signature: Review what is on this slide (refer them to the Pre-Trip Inspection SW document. Make sure you inform your drivers who the Reviewer will be in your DC so they know who to go to

Upon approach, visually inspect your vehicle for signs of damage or leaks Unlock the driver’s door and enter the cab a. Using 3 points of contact Locate and Review the prior day’s Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) a. If any safety related defects are noted… i. Verify that they have been properly repaired/corrected Ii. If not repaired/corrected, notify DC management prior to proceeding b. Turn on lights and 4-Way flashers Exit the cab a. Using 3 points of contact Unlatch the Hood and Open a. 8. Review the following items inside the engine compartment: a. Check fluid levels i. Oil ii. Coolant iii. Washer Fluid b. Coolant overflow cap is tight c. Inspect belts and hoses for signs of damage and/or leaks d. Inspect wiper blades for damage e. Review steer axle brake and suspension components for damage and/or leaks f. Check air filter housing and hoses i. Air filter is clean ii. Housing is properly secure iii. 9. Close hood and secure latches Place key in ignition and turn to accessory mode Note: Some vehicles come equipped with a light test mode; if present, activate 11. 12. Moving in a clockwise direction around the vehicle, inspect the following: a. Vehicle Identification present (Carrier Name, DOT #) b. Inspect tires for damage and/or irregular wear i. Tread depth = >4/32 on steer Axle and >2/32 on drive axle ii. Air pressure set to recommended setting c. Inspect wheels for damage i. Lug nuts are secure d. Inspect windshield glass for damage e. Mirrors are secure and free of damage f. Door handles are present and function properly g. Fuel tank(s) secure and fuel cap(s) tight h. Inspect DEF level & secure cap i. Inspection sticker is current i. Inspect frame for damage and/or loose body clamps k. Inspect body for damage l. Verify exhaust system is secure m. Verify mud flaps are present and secure n. Ensure all lights are functioning properly o. Verify rear bumper and door are secure i. Rear license plate present and secure ii. Lift gate functions properly and is secure (where applicable) p. a. Using 3 points of contact Verify the following items are present… a. Fire extinguisher present, secured, and fully charged b. Safety triangles are present c. Cab is free of debris d. Seat belt e. Mirrors are properly adjusted f. Insurance card present and current g. Spare fuses present h. Inspect the following items… a. Horn(s) function properly b. Dash warning lamps i. If illuminated, inspect for cause or call service provider c. Check windshield wiper functionality d. Brake air pressure is at sufficient operating level 17. Perform Static Brake Test a. Release all of the brakes with foot on brake b. Turn off engine c. Watch air pressure gauge i. Steps… Pre-Trip Inspection SW What is X? Perform an Applied Brake Test
a. Apply PSI of pressure to the brake system i. Pressure should not drop more than ~3psi b. Pump brake pedal 10 times i. This adjusts automatic slack adjuster ii. Low air warning light will sound if pressure drops below 60psi c. Continue pumping brake pedal until parking brake valve pops i. This occurs when pressure falls to ~20-40psi d. Restart the engine, rebuild air pressure e. Shift into drive and gently pull against the parking brake to ensure they hold the truck i. a. If no safety related deficiencies are found, proceed to start route b. If safety related deficiencies are found, immediately notify DC management. Let’s Practice… Pre-Trip Inspection SW What is X?
You will be in 2 teams Your job is to find the items that are out of compliance/incorrect for your assigned truck You will have 15 minutes Make sure someone on your team is writing down what you found We will hear a report-out from each team at the end of the time Make sure 2 trucks are set-up for use ahead of time. Make 5 items on each truck non-compliant (make sure to document what you did) Break your drivers into 2 teams (each team goes to a different truck) Give them 15 minutes Ask them to identify the items that are non-compliant/hazards (make sure they write it down) At the end of the time, ask each team to report what they found If any were missed, discuss.
