11 GIW HVF froth pump in Apatite concentrator, Finland
Plant decided to process fine and coarse fractions separately to improve total recovery and grade Fine fraction to be processed separately in Outotec flotation circuit, coarse fraction to be processed in hydrosizer circuit Immediately after start up problems with high froth at fines processing area. Pumpability was disappearing. Air up to 70% of total pulp volume Pumping fluctuates between 50 – 200 m3/h based to flowmeters. In practice fluctuation higher – air disturbed flow meter readings. Pump was competitor’s 8/6 Solution hunting include First: Chemical changes: pine fatty acids, water glass and/or arab gum to kill the froth. Results were encouraging but reagent dosages too high. Conventional air removal pump from paper industry tested first but maintenance cycle only a week. GIW introduced new patented HVF slurry pump. Installation after plant made modifications to pump base plate and motor connections. Pump was started January 2011 and was immediate success Competitor’s pump was installed at same sump for comparison purpose. After few minutes sump was overflowing when competitor’s pumps was started. After starting GIW pump again, during 10 minutes sump level was stabilized and no overflowing. OT – GIW Froth pumps are now invited to all severe frothy locations in the Finnish phosphate mine. Astana Mining and Metallurgy BHB Escondida copper mine in Chile 2 concentrator plants: Laguna Seca and Los Colorados. Total capacity tpd The problem: Cyclone feed pumps did not achieve maintenance break interval which grinding mills were achieving. Suction liners life <1000 hours Impeller life 1800 hours BHP Escondida wanted solution: 1) meet high safety standard, 2) maintain mill outage schedule and 3) minimize costs GIW responded: Suggestion: GIW suction liner and Impeller was installed to replace competitor parts. Careful part optimization and material selection lead to good results. Suction Liner lifetime improved to 1300 hours and impeller improves also. After first pump was running, BHP was confirmed about GIW quality. Wanted to replace rest of competitor’s cyclone feed pumps After replacements and further improvements, lifetime for pump wear parts currently > 2000 hours (same than mill’s outage) GIW has been provided further expansions since then for Cyclone feed pumping duties in BHP Escondida. If plant has shorter maintenance break intervals for cyclone feed pump (or tailings line pumps) compared to concentrator maintenance breaks, Try & Buy campaign can be considered. Typically maintenance break intervals between 2- 4 months in demanding grinding feed application If plant has problem with high spare part consumption, try & buy campaign can be considered.
