3 THE SITUATION Most Germans were Christians – 1/3 Catholics in the south - 2/3 Protestants in the North. Hitler needed to work with the Churches – he was not strong enough to overthrow them Christianity was not banned. However many Christians who opposed the Nazis were persecuted

16 THE PROTESTANT CHURCH Reich Church under Bishop Muller – Christianity and Nazis are in agreement Services end with Heil Hitler. Jewish Amen was banned. But Pastor Nielmoller ended up in Dachau Dietrich Bonhoeffer hanged in 1945 for his part in Operation Valkerie

18 THE CATHOLIC CHURCH Hitler signed the Concordat with Pius XI – Freedom of worship and Church schools. In return they did not criticise the Nazis and priests swore an oath of loyalty to the Nazis. Bishop Galen attacks the Nazis spoke out about T4 the Gestapo and racism. Only arrested in 1944 Mit Brenender Sorge – Papal Encyclical attacks the Nazis
