1 English Literary Studies: Creating Texts (20%)
SAETA Teacher Refresher Morning Saturday 13 February

2 What’s actually in Creating Texts?
A transformative texts exercise A ‘free’ written, oral or multimodal text

3 How do I ‘pitch’ these tasks to students?
It’s about becoming a better writer It’s about understanding genre and when and how to experiment It’s about continuing your ‘apprenticeship’ as a young writer

4 Transforming texts: some interesting suggestions from SACE world
Extended prose into a monologue Drama script based on a poem Film script transformed into a narrative Minor character transformed into a major character Poem based on a newspaper article

5 Fun facts for assessment in transforming texts:
Must be linked to another text and accompanied with a writer’s statement; 1,500 words or 9 minutes The text chosen as the basis for this task may or may not come from the texts in the shared studies

6 Double the fun: second assessment task
It’s ‘inspiration’, of course, but it’s also about demonstrating mastery of the features of the text type Students have to carve out time and study the genre that they are situating their texts within

7 Creating Texts: no time to be bored with these SACE suggestions
Written texts—a narrative; a newspaper or magazine article; expository writing; a personal letter; a description Spoken texts—a formal speech; a toast; a performance; a monologue; a podcast Multimodal texts—a multimodal presentation; an imaginative hypertext Etc. etc.

8 More fun facts on assessment:
This task needs to be up to 1000 words, or 6 minutes Keep artefacts, transcripts, recordings, etc. Clearly label student tasks (with SACE number and name)

9 Last thoughts and hopefully helpful tips:
Don’t double up responses (read Application 1) Maybe try and let the second task be a little more fun and open- ended.
