Introduction To Titus This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you (Titus 1:5 ESV)
3
Introduction To Titus For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party. (Titus 1:10 ESV)
4
Introduction To Titus But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. (Titus 2:1 ESV)
5
Introduction To Titus Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. (Titus 3:1-2 ESV)
6
Introduction To Titus Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness (Titus 1:1 ESV)
7
Main Idea/Central Thought of the Text
Revelation of Truth in general is not adequate to save. We need special revelation from God to come to the knowledge of salvation leading to a godly life.
8
Author Of The Letter: (Verse 1a)
Paul Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness (Titus 1:1 ESV)
9
Author Of The Letter: (Verse 1a)
Paul For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. (Psalm 84:10 ESV)
10
Author Of The Letter: (Verse 1a)
Paul Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness (Titus 1:1 ESV)
11
Author Of The Letter: (Verse 1a)
Paul Paul, an apostle—not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead (Galatians 1:1 ESV)
12
Author Of The Letter: (Verse 1a)
Paul Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness (Titus 1:1 ESV)
13
Purpose, Part 1: (Verse 1b)
For The Elect Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness (Titus 1:1 ESV)
14
Purpose, Part 1: (Verse 1b)
For The Elect Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, (Ephesians 1:3-5 ESV)
15
Purpose, Part 1: (Verse 1b)
For The Elect So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills. (Romans 9:16-18 ESV)
16
Purpose, Part 1: (Verse 1b)
For The Elect For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8 ESV)
17
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1c)
For The Elect’s Knowledge Of The Truth Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness (Titus 1:1 ESV)
18
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1c)
For The Elect’s Knowledge Of The Truth The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. (Psalm 19:1-2 ESV)
19
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1c)
For The Elect’s Knowledge Of The Truth For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. (Romans 1:20 ESV)
20
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1c)
For The Elect’s Knowledge Of The Truth The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.
21
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1c)
For The Elect’s Knowledge Of The Truth And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him.
22
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1c)
For The Elect’s Knowledge Of The Truth Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for “‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, “‘For we are indeed his offspring.’ Being then God's offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. (Acts 17:24-29 ESV)
23
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1c)
For The Elect’s Knowledge Of The Truth For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the word, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. (Romans 1:18-20 ESV)
24
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1c)
For The Elect’s Knowledge Of The Truth For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus. (Romans 2:14-16 ESV)
25
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1c)
For The Elect’s Knowledge Of The Truth All who fashion idols are nothing, and the things they delight in do not profit. Their witnesses neither see nor know, that they may be put to shame. Who fashions a god or casts an idol that is profitable for nothing? Behold, all his companions shall be put to shame, and the craftsmen are only human. Let them all assemble, let them stand forth. They shall be terrified; they shall be put to shame together. (Isaiah 44:9-11 ESV)
26
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1c)
For The Elect’s Knowledge Of The Truth For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened, Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. (Romans 1:21-23 ESV)
27
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1c)
For The Elect’s Knowledge Of The Truth Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. (Colossians 3:5 ESV)
28
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1c)
For The Elect’s Knowledge Of The Truth The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. (2 Corinthians 2:14 ESV)
29
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1c)
For The Elect’s Knowledge Of The Truth “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:17-19 ESV)
30
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1c)
For The Elect’s Knowledge Of The Truth Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I said, you are gods’? If he called them gods to whom the word of God came — and Scripture cannot be broken — do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? (John 10:34-36 ESV)
31
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1c)
For The Elect’s Knowledge Of The Truth And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. (2 Peter 3:15-16 ESV)
32
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1c)
For The Elect’s Knowledge Of The Truth For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.” (1 Timothy 5:18 ESV)
33
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1d)
Godliness Springing From Knowledge of The Truth Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness (Titus 1:1 ESV)
34
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1d)
Godliness Springing From Knowledge of The Truth For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” (Romans 1:16-17 ESV)
35
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1d)
Godliness Springing From Knowledge of The Truth And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. (John 17:3 ESV)
36
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1d)
Godliness Springing From Knowledge of The Truth “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” (John 14:15 ESV)
37
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1d)
Godliness Springing From Knowledge of The Truth Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. (Matthew 16:24-25 ESV)
38
Purpose, Part 2: (Verse 1d)
Godliness Springing From Knowledge of The Truth And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV)
