Groups We have placed the children into groups for Maths, English and Guided Reading. In the afternoon, the groups will vary according to the activities. During the year your child will move groups to ensure they progress to meet their own individual targets and to encourage socialisation with other members of the class.
4
Learning To be a successful learner your child needs to master the 6 key learning behaviours: Independence Thinking Perseverance Challenge Communication Cooperation We will continue to highlight these learning behaviours in assemblies and the ‘Star of the week’ will be awarded to a child who has demonstrated the focus learning behaviour.
5
Classroom Expectations
Building their independence - take responsibility for their own book changing, PE kit, lunch box, jumper, homework, etc. Become more responsible for their own learning, e.g. making sensible choices about choosing work partners Take pride in themselves, their work, their environment and their classmates’ achievements. Support them to develop strategies to problem solve independently before approaching an adults with their concerns. Model positive behaviour for the younger children to follow.
6
Reading We ask that your children read at home on at least 5 days of the week and that the reads are recorded and signed off in their Reading Journals. Stars will be awarded for this on Mondays. We encourage all the children to read with an adult and to talk about their books, but as they become older and more fluent just talking to them is fine (see handout for ideas). The children are responsible for changing their own reading books as and when they need to. 6
7
Times Tables In Year 3 we build on the work done with the 2, 5 and 10 and extend this with the 3, 4 and 8 times tables. They should be able to confidently recall and use the multiplication and division facts. By the end of Year 4 children should be confident with all their times tables up to 12 x 12 (and the corresponding division facts). Times tables will be tested on Thursdays.
8
Spellings Spellings will be given out and tested weekly on a Friday.
Children are expected to practise 5 times a week and bring their completed sheet in each Friday to be checked and awarded a star. There is is a list of the words the Government requires your child to be able to spell in the reading journal . Please practise these whenever you can.
9
Homework Learning log homework
Over the year there will be a mixture of English and maths activities and creative projects. There will be a maths activity to consolidate class work every other week along with a half termly learning log. A completion date will always be clearly given and children will be expected to bring in work half way through the time limit so they can share their progress. A homework club is run on Thursday lunchtimes where resources and teacher support are available.
