10 Section A: The ‘A Christmas Carol’ Questions

11 English Literature: Paper 2
Method Section A – A Christmas Carol: Question a READ (5 MINS) Read the extract carefully and highlight 3 places where what is asked in the question is shown. Make sure that at least ONE of your points refers to form/structure. For example, if the question is, ‘Explore how Dickens presents Scrooge’s character in this extract’, then highlight 3 places where you learn something about Scrooge’s character. These 3 points will be the evidence for your 3 PEEL paragraphs

12 English Literature: Paper 2
Method Section A – A Christmas Carol: Question a Language Structure Interesting vocab Sentence length or type Imagery, such as similes, metaphors, etc. Punctuation Other techniques, such as alliteration, onomatopaeia, etc. Repetition Dialogue

13 English Literature: Paper 2
Method Section A – A Christmas Carol: Question a 2. PLAN (10 MINS) Plan your answer using the structure below: P E L Introduction Give a VERY brief overview of what is happening in the extract and where in the novella it occurs. Paragraph 1 Say what your point is – how has Dickens used language or form/structure? Give your evidence for that point from the extract Explain how the evidence explains your point and use Single word analysis (SWA) Link it back to the question by saying how it answers the question. Paragraph 2 Paragraph 3 Conclusion Sum up everything you have said and give your opinion.

14 English Literature: Paper 2
Method Section A – A Christmas Carol: Question a PLAN (10 MINS) So, your plan should look something like this (if your question is ‘How does Dickens present Scrooge’s character in this extract’) P E L Introduction Scrooge is visited by two men collecting money for the poor on Christmas Eve. Stave 1. Paragraph 1 Language – Scrooge’s reaction to the word ‘liberality’ “At the ominous word ‘liberality’, Scrooge frowned” Liberality = freedom/open-mindedness. Shows Scrooge hates both these things. Scrooge = small-minded/wants people to be controlled Paragraph 2 Structure – he refuses to give them any money “Nothing!” Solitary word emphasises his rude refusal. Exclamation mark = he means it and isn’t sorry. He does not believe in charity and is rude and miserly Paragraph 3 Language – He tells them to go away “I don’t make merry myself at Christmas and I can’t afford to make idle people merry” He doesn’t go to any effort to have fun at xmas. Idle = lazy - he thinks all poor people are poor because they are lazy He is miserable and boring; he isn’t sympathetic to the poor Conclusion Dickens presents Scrooge as nasty, miserly and has no sympathy for the poor

15 English Literature: Paper 2
Method Section A – A Christmas Carol: Question a WRITE (15 MINS) Now, write up your plan using formal language and lots of detail. Always start with the point you can say most about in case you run out of time and cannot get your last point in (but make sure you include language AND structure). If your plan is detailed enough, it should not take long to write it up.

16 English Literature: Paper 2
Method Section A – A Christmas Carol: Question b PLAN (10 MINS) Here, you need to use the same planning structure, but you are working with your own knowledge of the whole of the text, not an extract. You do not have to write about form/structure in this section

17 English Literature: Paper 2
Do this NOW – 10 mins Method Section A – A Christmas Carol: Question b PLAN (10 MINS) Use the same table as in Question a to plan an answer to the question: ‘Explain how Dickens portrays poverty elsewhere in the novel’. In your answer you must consider: What poverty is shown How poverty affects those involved Your PEEL paragraphs for this answer should include this information: P Give your point – where is poverty shown elsewhere in the novel? E Give your example – a quote to show where poverty occurs Explain how the poverty is shown Use SWA – analyse the effect of a particular word L Link to the question by answering the bullet points - say how the poverty is shown and how it affects those involved

18 English Literature: Paper 2
Method Section A – A Christmas Carol: Question b WRITE (15 mins) Now spend 15 mins writing up your notes in the plan using formal language and adding detail. Do this NOW – 15 mins

19 Section B Part One: The Poetry Anthology Question

20 English Literature: Paper 2
Method Section B – Poetry: Part One – Anthology Question READ (5 MINS) Read the poem carefully and highlight examples where what is asked in the question occurs. Make sure that at least ONE of your points refers to form/structure. For example, if the question is, ‘Compare how tension is created in the two poems’, then highlight examples where tension is created Pick two or three points which will be some of the evidence for your PEEL paragraphs

21 English Literature: Paper 2
Method Section B – Poetry: Part One – Anthology Question PLAN (10 MINS) Now you need to choose the the poem you are going to compare this one with. Make sure you choose a poem that is similar in theme/topic to the poem in the question. Note down two or three ways this poem does what the question asks. For example, if the question is, ‘Compare how tension is created in the two poems’, then note down examples where tension is created in the poem you have chosen – you will need to do this from memory.

22 Think of a Mexican pickle…
…A PEECL!

23 Now think of a Mexican picking a Mexican Pickle…
…PEECEECL!

24 English Literature: Paper 2
Method Section B – Poetry: Part One – Anthology Question PLAN (10 MINS) In this question, you will need to compare the two poems – you must talk about both poems in each paragraph. You MUST also talk about context here. P E1 C1 E2 C2 L Intro. Give a very brief overview of the poems, linked slightly to the question Para 1 Language Make your point – how are the two poems similar/different? Give your evidence from Poem 1. Explain how the evidence proves your point. Use SWA. Refer to Context. How does the context of the poem link in? Give your evidence from poem 2. Link to the question. Explicitly point out how your point answers the question. Para 2 Structure Para 3 ? Conc. Sum up what you’ve said and give your opinion

25 English Literature: Paper 2
Method Section B – Poetry: Part One – Anthology Question PLAN (10 MINS) So, if your question is, ‘Compare how tension is created in the two poems’ and you have decided to compare Catrin with Cousin Kate, the start of your plan may look something like this…

26 English Literature: Paper 2
C1 E2 C2 L Intro. Catrin = a mother remembers the birth of her daughter CK = a ballad – the speaker recounts her liaison with a Lord who goes on to marry her cousin Para 1 Language Both poems use extended metaphors “the tight red rope of love” “that old rope” Separation of umbilical cord. “tight” = tension Tying a boat – balance between freedom & safety Links to the tension between her and her daughter – quest for freedom “might have been a dove” “stronger wing” / “You sit in gold and sing” Bird imagery – what the speaker could have been. “dove” = peace/ love/ freedom. Kate is trapped like a bird in a cage Links to rights of women at the time – double standards Catrin = rope to show fight between freedom/ safety. CK = bird to show speaker’s jealousy & tension between the women Para 2 Structure Para 3 ? Conc.

27 English Literature: Paper 2
Method Section B – Poetry: Part One – Anthology Question WRITE (20 mins) Now spend 20 mins writing up your notes in the plan using formal language and adding detail. Do this NOW – 20 mins

28 Section B Part Two: The Unseen Poetry Question

29 English Literature: Paper 2
Method Section B – Poetry: Part Two – Unseen Question READ (10 MINS) Read the poems carefully and highlight examples where what is asked in the question occurs. Make sure that at least ONE of your points refers to form/structure. For example, if the question is, ‘Compare the ways the writers present an old person in the poems’, then highlight examples where an old person is presented Pick two or three points on each poem, which will be the some of the evidence for your PEEL paragraphs

30 Think of peeling a Mexican orange…
…PEEEEL!

31 English Literature: Paper 2
Method Section B – Poetry: Part Two – Unseen Question PLAN (10 MINS) In this question, you will need to compare the two unseen poems – you must talk about both poems in each paragraph. P E1 E2 L Intro. Give a brief overview of the two poems Para 1 Language Make your point – how are the two poems similar/different? Give your evidence from Poem 1. Explain how the evidence proves your point. Use SWA. Give your evidence from poem 2. Link to the question. Explicitly point out how your point answers the question. Para 2 Structure Para 3 ? Conc. Sum up what you have just said and give your opinion

32 English Literature: Paper 2
Method Section B – Poetry: Part Two – Unseen Question WRITE (20 mins) Now spend 20 mins writing up your notes in the plan using formal language and adding detail. Do this NOW – 20 mins

33 English Literature: Paper 2
Don’t forget to spend 5 minutes at the end checking all your work. GOOD LUCK!
