2 How God Speaks To Man Hebrews 1:1-4

3 Hebrews 1:1-4 “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.”

4 How God Speaks To Man He Does Speak

5 God Does Speak To Man 1) Two time frames mentioned.
“…spoke in time past to the fathers…” (v. 1). “…has in these last days spoken to us…” (v. 2).

6 God Does Speak To Man 2) Two methods of revelation.
“…spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets” (v. 1). “…has in these last days spoken to us by His Son…” (v. 2).

7 God Does Speak To Man 3) Two different groups to whom He spoke.
“…spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets” (v. 1). “…has in these last days spoken to us by His Son…” (v. 2).

8 God Does Speak To Man 4) Two things revealed about His previous revelation. “…at various times…” (v. 1). “…in various ways…” (v. 1).

9 God Does Speak To Man 5) What a blessing that God has spoken to us!
“Moreover by them Your servant is warned, And in keeping them there is great reward” (Psalm 19:11).

10 How God Speaks To Man He Does Speak How He Spoke

11 How He Spoke In Time Past
1) When He spoke. “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets” (Hebrews 1:1). “In the past, long ago, of olden times, formerly, long before now. Pálai in reality means old, what lies behind (Heb. 1:1)” (CWSD-NT). “Better, of old. The time of the Old Testament revelation. It indicates a revelation, not only given, but completed in the past” (Vincent). “long ago” (TDNT).

12 How He Spoke In Time Past
2) Who He spoke to. “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets” (Hebrews 1:1). Fathers – “fathers, forefathers, ancestors” (CWSD-NT). W. C. Moseley, in his commentary on Hebrews says, “However, the term “fathers” was commonly applied to those Jewish patriarchs who came after Abraham. It is these to whom the author refers, for the Jews considered Abraham their father (Matt. 3:9; John 8:33).”

13 How He Spoke In Time Past
3) Those He used to speak to the fathers. “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets” (Hebrews 1:1). Prophets – “The OT prophets are the mouth through which God speaks” (TDNT). CWSD-NT quotes N.T. passages which refer to these men as prophets, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Joel, Micah, Jonah, Zechariah, Daniel, Samuel, David, Elisha, Asaph, and Balaam.

14 How He Spoke In Time Past
4) An illustration. “Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them’” (Luke 16:27-29).

15 How He Spoke In Time Past
5) When He spoke – took over 1,000 years to reveal O.T. “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets” (Hebrews 1:1). “The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, to whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month” (Jeremiah 1:1-3).

16 How He Spoke In Time Past
6) Different ways of revelation. “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets” (Hebrews 1:1). “for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21). “And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed” (Exodus 3:2). “Then the Spirit took me up and brought me in a vision by the Spirit of God into Chaldea, to those in captivity. And the vision that I had seen went up from me” (Ezekiel 11:24).

17 How God Speaks To Man He Does Speak How He Spoke His Speech Now

18 How He Speaks In These Last Days
1) God once again speaks – He tells us when. “has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds” (Hebrews 1:2). Last days – “…referring to the closing days of the Jewish age” (W.C. Moseley, Commentary on Hebrews). Dan King says, “the age of the Messiah” (Truth Commentary, Hebrews). “And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams” (Acts 2:17). Quoted from Joel 2:28.

19 How He Speaks In These Last Days
2) His spokesman. “has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds” (Hebrews 1:2). “But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this” (John 8:40). “And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak” (John 12:50).

20 How God Speaks To Man He Does Speak How He Spoke His Speech Now
Apostles Authority

21 Christ Gave Apostles Authority To Speak
1) Holy Spirit given to them. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you” (John 14:26). “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come” (John 16:13).

22 Christ Gave Apostles Authority To Speak
2) Power was given to them. “And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16:19). “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained” (John 20:23).

23 Christ Gave Apostles Authority To Speak
3) Apostle confirm this. “But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ” (Galatians 1:11-12). “For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty…for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:16, 21).

24 How God Speaks To Man He Does Speak How He Spoke His Speech Now
Apostles Authority New Revelations?

25 What About Latter Day Revelations?
1) Many make this claim today. (a) Mormons claim to have another testament of Jesus Christ. (b) Mary Baker Eddy in her Science & Health says it is from God. (c) Ellen G. White claimed she had visions from God that emphasized the keeping of the Sabbath. (d) Islam says the Koran (Quran) is the word of Allah. (e) Pentecostal groups claim that Jehovah still speaks to them separate and apart from the word of God.

26 What About Latter Day Revelations?
2) If this is true – Apostles not lead into all truth. “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come” (John 16:13).

27 What About Latter Day Revelations?
3) If this is true – the law of Christ is not perfect. “But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does” (James 1:25).

28 What About Latter Day Revelations?
4) If this is true – the faith was not once delivered. “Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3).

29 What About Latter Day Revelations?
5) If this is true – confirming signs would be necessary. “And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen” (Mark 16:20).
