What is biodiversity?

3 Biodiversity The number of and variety of organisms found within an ecosystem or region. And The number of and variety of ecosystems found within and beyond the region.

4 Biodiversity Biologically diverse ecosystems: Healthy Complex Stable

5 Succession Nature tends to increase diversity over time.

7 Monoculture The opposite of biodiversity. The growing of one species.
Examples: a lawn, wheat field, or corn field.

8 Monoculture Species are identical Few complex food webs.
Disease can spread quickly. Often requires use to pesticides to stop nature from biodiversifying.

9 Resilience The ability of an ecosystem to remain functional and stable in the presence of disturbances. The greater the diversity: Increased plant cover. More resistant to invasive species. More disease resistant.
