2 Presentation Name Course Name Unit # – Lesson #.# – Lesson Name Concept Sketch A graphical representation of an idea that can quickly communicate design intent and details All content and images © 2016 Project Lead The Way, Inc. unless noted otherwise.

3 Presentation Name Course Name Unit # – Lesson #.# – Lesson Name Concept Sketch Can be quickly and roughly drawn to document brainstormed ideas or show more detail and include shading to communicate more precise information Accessible Snowboard Image courtesy of the National Museum of American History, Behring Center © 2016 Project Lead The Way, Inc.

6 Concept Sketch – Your Turn
Presentation Name Course Name Unit # – Lesson #.# – Lesson Name Concept Sketch – Your Turn Using the Sketching Tips Guide, sketch the tape dispenser shown (or a tape dispenser of your own). Do not trace the image, and do not add shading. [When most students have a reasonable outline of the tape dispenser, move on to the next slide.] All content and images © 2016 Project Lead The Way, Inc. unless noted otherwise.

7 Presentation Name Course Name Unit # – Lesson #.# – Lesson Name Shading A few notes: Shading makes your drawings appear more realistic by adding depth and contrast Pencil hardness Artist pencils vary in hardness It is easier to shade with a softer pencil Typical school pencil hardness HB All content and images © 2016 Project Lead The Way, Inc. unless noted otherwise.

8 Presentation Name Course Name Unit # – Lesson #.# – Lesson Name Shading Step 1. After you have created a line drawing, make a value scale using your pencil(s). This will help you determine the darkness of your shading as you work. Values that may work for a dark colored object Values that may work for a light colored object Create a value scale at the bottom of the page on which you sketches your tape dispenser. Few items will require the full spectrum All content and images © 2016 Project Lead The Way, Inc. unless noted otherwise.

9 Shading Step 2. Locate your light source and make a mental note.
Presentation Name Course Name Unit # – Lesson #.# – Lesson Name Shading Step 2. Locate your light source and make a mental note. Areas closest to the light will be lighter Areas further from the light will be darker darkest lightest All content and images © 2016 Project Lead The Way, Inc. unless noted otherwise.

10 Presentation Name Course Name Unit # – Lesson #.# – Lesson Name Shading Step 3. Apply shading to your sketch. Refer to your subject frequently to compare it with your sketch. Note that the clothespin is a lightly colored object and so the darkest values in the value scale are not used heavily. 11 Shading used for dispenser used for tape Value Scale Presentation Name
Course Name Unit # – Lesson #.# – Lesson Name Shading used for dispenser used for tape Value Scale This is one artist’s representation of the tape dispenser with shading. The tape dispenser is black in color, and so the darkest values in the value scale are used to shade the dispenser. The transparent tape, however, is very light in color and so the lightest values are used. All content and images © 2016 Project Lead The Way, Inc. unless noted otherwise.
