2 Acts 11:19-22 19 So then those who were scattered because of the persecution that occurred in connection with Stephen made their way to Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except to Jews alone. 20 But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who came to Antioch and began speaking to the Greeks also, preaching the Lord Jesus. 21 And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a large number who believed turned to the Lord. 22 The news about them reached the ears of the church at Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas off to Antioch.

3 Acts 11:23-26 23 Then when he arrived and witnessed the grace of God, he rejoiced and began to encourage them all with resolute heart to remain true to the Lord; 24 for he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And considerable numbers were brought to the Lord. 25 And he left for Tarsus to look for Saul; 26 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. And for an entire year they met with the church and taught considerable numbers; and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.

4 Acts 11:27-30 27 Now at this time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 One of them named Agabus stood up and began to indicate by the Spirit that there would certainly be a great famine all over the world. And this took place in the reign of Claudius. 29 And in the proportion that any of the disciples had means, each of them determined to send a contribution for the relief of the brethren living in Judea. 30 And this they did, sending it in charge of Barnabas and Saul to the elders.

6 I. The Church’s Fundamentals (11:19-21)
God dispenses His people to reach the lost (11:19-20) God draws the lost to Himself (11:21) The extent of God’s drawing The evidences of God’s drawing “believed”

7 What does it mean to “believe”?
1. Knowing oneself to be a sinner, and Christ to have died for sinners (Romans 5:6-8; 1 Peter 3:18) Romans 5: For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 1 Peter 3:18 - For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit…

8 What does it mean to “believe”?
2. Abandoning all self-righteousness and self-confidence, and casting oneself wholly upon Him for pardon and peace (Romans 4:4-5; Philippians 3:10) Romans 4: Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. 5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness…

9 What does it mean to “believe”?
3. There has been an exchange of your own natural enmity and rebellion against God for a spirit of grateful submission to the will of Christ through the renewing of your heart by the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:3-7; Romans 8:6-8) Titus 3: For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. 4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, 5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

10 I. The Church’s Fundamentals (11:19-21)
God dispenses His people to reach the lost (11:19-20) God draws the lost to Himself (11:21) The extent of God’s drawing The evidences of God’s drawing “believed” “turned to the Lord”

11 Words of Christ “I have glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do” (John 17:4). “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me to accomplish His work” (John 4:34).

12 Ephesians 2:8-10 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
