Moisture Moisture Monitors The instruments shown here are for relative humidity, dew point, and temperature. There is a variety of tests available to detect (what type) and quantify (how much) mold contamination. Three basic scenarios that you can apply to testing for mold – 1. You may see visible mold. 2. You may not see mold but you may identify one or more “”s. 3. You may not see visible mold nor “”s.

Mold Awareness Training Sample to Identify “What” is in the Building... Industrial Hygienist with a single stage impactor using an agar compound in Petri Dish-type impactor. The sample goes to the lab. Sometimes you may take bulk samples or send in a swab, bio-tape, or culture dish.

9 Do-It-Yourself Mold Test Kit
Mold Awareness Training Do-It-Yourself Mold Test Kit The “MOLD DO IT YOURSELF KIT” is $ It is recommended that at least two kits be purchased, one for each area of concern and one for outdoors. It is a Petri dish set up The lab cost is $30 per sample, not including shipping and handling.

11 Finding the “What” – Bio-Tape
Mold Awareness Training Finding the “What” – Bio-Tape BIO Tape Sampling BIO Tape (Packaging) Bio-Tape. Bio-Tape provides one sampling method for use in the determination of possible microbial, bioaerosol, and inorganic dust contamination in a simple, standardized way. Bio-Tape consists of a flexible plastic microscope slide with a pre-defined adhesive area. A center-line marker on the slide aids the laboratory analyst in finding the center of the sample area. Each slide is provided with a unique serial number for traceability and packed in a slide mailer to prevent cross contamination. SAMPLING PROCEDURE: Remove slide from provided plastic slide mailer. Document the sample location on the slide label and complete any required documentation for the laboratory. Peel off protective liner from slide to expose adhesive. Place slide with the adhesive side down on the surface to be sampled. (Use the centering line to orient the adhesive over the exact sample location desired.) Gently press down to ensure contact is made. Do not press down hard. The adhesive is very tacky and only needs to be pressed gently. Carefully remove slide from surface and place it back into slide mailer. DO NOT REPLACE plastic “Peel” liner. Send slide to laboratory for analysis.

12 Finding the “What” -- SWAB
Mold Awareness Training Finding the “What” -- SWAB SWAB (Sampling) SWAB (Packaging) Collecting Swab Samples Remove the swab from the package aseptically – don’t contaminate. Open the transport tube and insert the swab completely to wet the tip in the solution. Gently swab the desired area thoroughly, using a rolling motion with the swab. Insert the swab into the transport tube and seal the cap tightly. Document the sample location and ID on the transport tube and on the laboratory chain of custody. Ship swab to the laboratory for analysis as soon as possible. $29.95/pkg of 50; $21.95/pkg of 10 swabs and 10 templates.

13 Finding the “What” – Bioaerosol Impact Sampler
Mold Awareness Training Finding the “What” – Bioaerosol Impact Sampler Basic Setup Sampler Close-up CPWR purchased a EMS Cyclex Indoor Air Quality Sampler Deluxe Kit ($1,495) – A CyClex Non-viable Organic Bioaerosol Impactor); Multi-accessory Adapter Cap; 5 – 30 MegaLife IAQ pump w/rotameter; 25 Slides w/5 slide mailers; ($69.95 – refill); 25 Wall Probes w/Debris Cap ($14.95/10 – refill); 100’ Vinyl Tubing; Stud Finder Sensor; Hand Drill with 1/4” bit; Vacuum Dust Sampling Kit: -- Cassettes , ($69.95 Box of 20 – Refill); Zip Bags, Templates; Sampling Stand; and Case (Pelican)

A CyClex Non-viable Organic Bioaerosol Impactor with top off so slide can be seen in the 360 degree impact chamber. The flow rate on the pump should be set to 20 lpm and pull a sample for 10 minutes (clean outdoor and indoor). Pull 8-10 minutes samples for high activity (indoor) and 2-3 minutes for Inner Wall Samples. This impactor tests for common fungal spores at an efficiency of .86 microns, with Aspergillus spores usually at 1.8 microns and Cladosporium at 2.5 microns.

15 “Behind The Wall” Sampler
Mold Awareness Training “Behind The Wall” Sampler Inner Wall System Instructions: Position Multi-Accessory Adapter Cap on the top of the CyClex. (can also use Air-O-cell or Cyclex-D cassette) Use the stud finder to detect chamber. Use the low-speed hand drill to drill hole in wall. (This reduces excess gypsum or wood dust.) Insert inner wall probe. Push protective end cap off with debris cap removal tool. Attach tubing to Multi-Accessory Adapter Cap and to inner wall probe. Pull a two minute sample at 20 lpm. Remove Multi-Accessory Adapter Cap. Remove slide from CyClex. Place slide in mailer and send to preferred lab.

Carpet Sampler w/Pump Vacuum Carpet /Dust Sampler. Remove round plastic (red) pin from the bottom of the Dust Samper cassette. Using tubing, attach the Dust Sampler cassette to the pump. Remove Debris Cap (longer, black) from the Dust Sampler Cassette. To achieve a quantitative sample, set pump to maximum flow rate (30 lpm on CPWR’s pumps) and then vacuum carpet area inside the Template. Turn Dust Sampler Cassette upright and turn pump off. Replace Debris Cap on Dust Sampler Cassette. Remove Dust Sampler Cassette from tubing and replace round plastic pin. Put dust Sampler Cassette in plastic Zip Bag and send to preferred lab.

17 How Much Mold is in The Air?
Mold Awareness Training How Much Mold is in The Air? Pump w/rotameter Micro Cassette SAMPLING PROCEDURES when using a Cyclex-d disposable 360-degree impact chamber sampler. Pump flow rate is 20 lpm. Remove blue pin from bottom of the Cyclex-d. Connect one end of tubing (5’ or less) to the bottom of the Cyclex-d. No adapters are needed. Connect the other end of the tubing to a pump pre-calibrated to 20 lpm. Remove the red cap from the top of the Cyclex-d. Turn pump on and pull a sample for 10 minutes depending on the environment. When sampling is completed, replace the blue pin and the red cap to the bottom and top of the Cyclex-d. Send to a preferred laboratory. Environment Clean = (outdoor/indoor) = minutes High Activity (indoor) = minutes Inner Wall Samples = minutes Do not expose the Cyclex-d cassette to temperatures above 120 degrees F.

Micro Cassettes Air – O - Cell Cyclex - d SAMPLING PROCEDURES when using a Air-O-Cell. Set-up the pump location to be sampled. Connect the tubing to the pump and attach to the sampling stand (tripod). Turn on the pump and adjust the flow meter to read 15 lpm. Remove the outlet label (end with the round hole) from the Air-O-Cell cassette and connect to the tubing. Be sure to save the label for sealing the cassette after sampling. You might affix the label to the side of the cassette during sampling. When ready to sample, remove the inlet label from the Air-O-Cell and turn the pump on. Run the desired amount of time based on the recommended sampling times. After sampling, record the sampling time and flow rate on the laboratory chain of custody form and send sample out for analysis. Recommended Sampling Times lpm Clean office environment or outdoors = min (no visible dust) Indoor environment, high activity = min Indoor environment w/drywall renovation = min Inside an Air-O-Cell
