States of Matter Year 1 Science
2
Note Expectations notes must be written neatly
letters should not be too BIG! write on each line, unless instructed to skip a line for another section have a puke page on standby: if you run out of room on the first page, then continue writing on the puke page (glue after the presentation!)
3
Top of the Page Your notes should contain the following at the top of the page: The essential question (EQ: What are the 4 states of matter?) The date (12 November 2014) and page # The title (States of Matter)

5
Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space;
6
Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space; made up of atoms, the building blocks and smallest units of matter

8
Kinetic Theory: All matter is composed of particles
Particles are in constant motion Particles hit each other and the walls of containers

Draw the following chart in your notes:
STATE CHARACTERISTICS PARTICLES STATES OF MATTER
11
STATES OF MATTER STATE CHARACTERISTICS PARTICLES SOLID
Definite shape and volume Closely packed together; vibrate
12
STATES OF MATTER STATE CHARACTERISTICS PARTICLES SOLID LIQUID
Not a definite shape; definite volume Have more space; slide past each other
13
STATES OF MATTER STATE CHARACTERISTICS PARTICLES SOLID LIQUID GAS
No definite shape or volume Particles move very fast past each other; spread far out
14
Positively and negatively charged
STATES OF MATTER STATE CHARACTERISTICS PARTICLES PLASMA High temperature gas Positively and negatively charged
15
BrainPOP States of Matter
16
BRAIN BREAK! Determine whether the following examples would be considered a solid, liquid, gas, or plasma
17
SKIP 1 LINE
18
The state of a sample of matter depends on temperature, which is the amount of kinetic energy an object’s atoms contain
19
BRAIN BREAK! With your group, determine what would happen to temperature in the following scenarios: An ice-cube (solid) turns into liquid water (liquid) when left out too long from the freezer. Melted butter (liquid) turns back into a block of butter (solid) when placed back into the refrigerator.
20
Note Review highlight in yellow matter, atom, Kinetic Theory, solid, liquid, gas, plasma, temperature underline in red the definitions of matter, atom, temperature circle in blue the 3 parts of the Kinetic Theory outline the States of Matter diagram in green
