Presentation on theme: "WHAT GOOD CAN COME FROM THIS?"— Presentation transcript:

1 WHAT GOOD CAN COME FROM THIS?
Brainstorm in class ideas of what waste can be used for – what can be recycled.

2 How do humans try and manage the demand/supply of resources?
"Sustainable means using methods, systems and materials that won't deplete resources or harm natural cycles" (Rosenbaum, 1993). Sustainability "identifies a concept and attitude in development that looks at a site's natural land, water, and energy resources as integral aspects of the development" (Vieira,1993) "Sustainability integrates natural systems with human patterns and celebrates continuity, uniqueness and placemaking" (Early, 1993) What is the key idea being expressed by these quotes? Sustainable developments are those which fulfill present and future needs (WECD, 1987) while [only] using and not harming renewable resources and unique human-environmental systems of a site: [air], water, land, energy, and human ecology and/or those of other [off-site] sustainable systems (Rosenbaum 1993 and Vieria 1993).

3 Processes to help achieve a sustainable future
BENEFICIATION SUBSTITUTION MAXIMISATION Processes to help achieve a sustainable future Use the diagram from Dove to add notes for each sub heading. RECYCLING RATIONING QUOTAS

4 Recycling – what can be made into what?
Which of these items can be recycled into which – bottles – fleece; mobile phones – jewellery; tyres – shoe soles

5 Question: Is recycling the answer to sustainability?
Research – use the internet to answer the above question. Make sure that you discuss the pro’s and con’s. Include examples of substances that can be recycled and what they can be turned into. Try and find some ‘extreme’ examples. Also include some ‘facts and figures’ – try and find some for LEDCs as well as MEDCs. There is information on Moodle to help you get started. Structure your answer as if you are writing a newspaper article. Link from slide to Guardian article about recycling banks at subway stations where people can exchange plastic bottles for subway credits. I don’t want just the obvious examples, there are loads of internet sites about this if you take the time. If you hand in an article about paper recycling etc then you will have to resubmit it – I want the unusual! This task is part of the ‘Comms’ ESW and so students need to produce a plan, draft and final copy of their article and it needs to be at least 500 words long and be completely free of spelling/grammar errors.
