10 United Way in Action Mrs. Johnson needed help. She was on a fixed income, had health issues and could not afford the food she needed. The day she walked into Pender County Christian Services changed her life. PCCS gave her two free outfits and provided her with fruits and vegetables to help sustain her. She was so grateful that not only could she now eat, but because of the love and support of PCCS through their grant with the United Way of the Cape Fear Area, she could also purchase her medicine and pay some of her bills. Forever grateful, Mrs. Johnson tells the world that PCCS has made an amazing difference in her life and she would not be here without them.

11 United Way in Action It was Julie’s husband had just left her and her three children to fend for themselves. With no job, money or food to support her family, Julie didn’t know how to cope or where to turn. Her kids were hungry, and she would not let that happen. Thankfully, Julie found the Backpack Program at Matthew’s Ministry. Today, three years later, after receiving support and love along with food for her family from Matthew’s Ministry’s Backpack Program, Julie is stable and on her feet. She has a job, but she has never forgotten the kindness and support she received from Matthew’s Ministries through their partnership with United Way of the Cape Fear Area. Recently, Matthew’s Ministries received a thank you letter along with a $10 donation from Julie. It was her way of paying it forward.

12 United Way in Action Ella was 39, has a five year old daughter and was five months pregnant when she was abused by her husband. She was treated for injuries at the local hospital and spoke with law enforcement about her abuser. He was arrested. That was just the beginning of her journey to independence at Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, Inc. During her residency at DVSS, Ella received clothing, transportation aid and assistance creating a Goals and Safety plan. She also completed a 12-week Empowerment Program which gave her the confidence to move forward. Today, Ella and her children have their own apartment. DVSS provided assistance with furnishings and supplies to make their new house a stable home. Ella also received a Woman’s Independence Scholarship to a local college to pursue a degree in accounting.
