5 Its All About Balance? Independence Restriction Assessment Resources
Priorities Expectations Culture History Strategy Demographics Legislation Independence Restriction

6 ? Law Risk

7 Hoarder who has filled his flat with thousands of newspapers, magazines and books faces eviction because he is a 'fire hazard‘ Brian Clenshaw, 52, also can't help collecting coins, DVDs and stamps Former salesman claims syndrome was brought on by a road accident in 2004

8 Health & Social Care Integration
9 Health & Wellbeing Outcomes People are able to look after and improve their own health and wellbeing and live in good health for longer Joining up services – while not creating new boundaries Impetus for other organisations to explore their contribution to 9 Health & Wellbeing Outcomes Strengthening the appropriate sharing of information Common goals and aims = desired outcomes Building the culture

9 MY THOUGHTS Build on good multi-agency working we already have in place More reflection on difficult cases – accelerates learning Look beyond our islands for inspiration and coaching Recognise the imperfections of world we live in Value and support our staff who have to make the difficult decisions Involve the wider community – they too are a resource

10 JUST TO ADD BALANCE..... Does sharing more information heighten our own anxieties? Will we be more or less targeted on those at risk with greater volumes of information? Have we got the capacity to process more information and does this risk diverting us away from the really high risk cases? What is happening in Shetland today that others know about but we do not – when ‘we’ are the ones that can take the necessary action?

11 Interference or Intervention?
In physics, interference is something that happens when two or more waves are in the same space. Sometimes the peak of one wave joins with the peak of another wave, so the resulting peak is twice as high. Sometimes the peak of one wave falls into the trough of another wave, and the surface is then flat. When waves add their effects, it is called positive interference, or constructive interference. When one wave subtracts from the effects of the other, it is called negative interference, or destructive interference. If two people pushed on a car in the same direction, they would move the car better than either one alone. That would be positive interference.

12 ‘I want my homeless brother to be forced to get help’
Abi is desperate to get help for her 28-year-old brother who has been sleeping rough since February. Patrick, an aspiring musician, has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Abi says he's been offered help countless times but he always refuses, now she wants that help to be forced upon him. An expert has told Newsbeat there are many homeless people like him in the UK being "failed" by the system. “We're all very scared. I don't see how this can go on for much longer” (Abi) Under the Mental Health Act, in certain circumstances someone suffering from a serious mental illness can be taken to hospital against their will.
