12 energy is always conserved
The mechanical energy of a system is conserved when there are no outside forces acting on the system. When there are outside forces acting on the system, these forces change the mechanical energy of the system. For example, friction turns mechanical energy into thermal energy. We find, however, that energy never appears or disappears randomly—it always comes from somewhere and goes somewhere. This means that the total energy is always conserved. So, while mechanical energy is not always conserved, the total energy is—you cannot gain or lose energy from nothing!

14 Identifying Types of Energy

15 Selected types of energy
There are many types of energy that we try to categorize and classify. Here are 10: Kinetic Energy Gravitational Potential Energy Elastic Potential Energy Chemical Potential Energy Thermal Energy Electric Energy Magnetic Energy Nuclear Energy Radiant Energy (Light or Radiation) Acoustical Energy
