energy is always conserved
The mechanical energy of a system is conserved when there are no outside forces acting on the system. When there are outside forces acting on the system, these forces change the mechanical energy of the system. For example, friction turns mechanical energy into thermal energy. We find, however, that energy never appears or disappears randomly—it always comes from somewhere and goes somewhere. This means that the total energy is always conserved. So, while mechanical energy is not always conserved, the total energy is—you cannot gain or lose energy from nothing!
