The Trisynaptic Neuronal Network Of The Hippocampus.
Created By: Alex Szendrei
2
The Hippocampus Part of the limbic system
Memory and spatial navigation Located in the medial temporal lobe, underneath the cortical surface Two halves: left and right sides of the brain Resembles a seahorse, "hippo- kampos"
3
Parts Of Hippocampus Dentate gyrus (DG) Hippocampus proper:
CA1–3 (cornu ammonis) Subicular complex: Subiculum (sb) Presubiculum (prs) Parasubiculum (pas) Entorhinal cortex (EC): Medial (MEC) Lateral (LEC)
4
Trisynaptic Circuit In transverse plane, three interconnected afferent pathways Three major cell groups: granule cells, CA3 pyramidal neurons, and CA1 pyramidal cells. Trisynaptic pathway Entorhinal cortex -> the dentate gyrus Dentate gyrus -> CA3 via mossy cell fibers. Ca3 -> ca1 via schaffer collaterals Ca1 -> sbiculum, carried out through the fornix. Collectively the dentate gyrus, ca1 and ca3 of the hippocampus compose the trisynaptic loop.
