1 Lab Reports and Experimental Design
Mrs. Stephens 9/23/14

2 Agenda Place your homework in your bin. Read Objectives Do Now
Complete Marshmallow Challenge and Analysis Experimental Design and Practice Writing a Lab Report

3 Do Now What do scientists do if their hypothesis is false or partially true?

4 Experimental Design Independent Variable- the factor that is manipulated or changed throughout the experiment Dependent Variable- the factor in an experiment that scientists want to observe; this variable changes due the independent variable Control Group- the group in an experiment that receives no treatment; this is used to be sure that the experiment is working correctly Experimental Group- the group in an experiment that is actually being tested Trials- the number of times an experiment is repeated; a series of tests performed over a period of time

5 Experimental Design Independent variables are manipulated.
Experimental studies allow scientists to determine what causes a phenomenon (natural event). Independent variables are manipulated. Dependent variables are observed and measured. Controls are conditions that are kept the same. Experimental Design Video Clip

6 Experimental Design Practice
Work in groups of 3-4, and complete the experimental design worksheet. You will have 20 minutes to complete the worksheet for a class grade.

7 Experimental Design Answer Review
The teacher will read the practice question. Move to the area of the room that has the correct answer A= Independent Variable B= Dependent Variable C= Control Group D= Experimental Group

8 Take out your marshmallow challenge plan.
Lab Report Take out your marshmallow challenge plan. Popcorn Read- Lab Report Rubric

9 Sample 20 pt. Lab Report

10 Sample 20 pt. Lab Report

11 Sample 20 pt. Lab Report

12 Sample 20 pt. Lab Report

13 Marshmallow Challenge Lab Report
Spend the remainder of class completing your lab report. What you do not complete in class must be done for homework.
