Re Teach session
2
Lab Safety Before… Read all directions and procedures
Ask the teacher any questions you may have Put on all safety equipment, tie back long hair, and remove jewelry During Tell the teacher immediately if you spill something No horseplay – Someone could get hurt! All partners remain in work area After Return all supplies to proper area Wash and dry work space Wash your hands
3
Scientific Measurement
The basic unit of length is the… 1 cm = mm Therefore, 18 cm = mm meter 10 180

Triple-beam Balance Place the object on the scale
Move the largest weight until the arm drops below zero, then move it back one notch Move the top weight until the arm drops below zero, then move it back one notch Move the smallest weight until the arm balances with zero Add up all the values – hundreds, tens, and ones Find the most accurate reading, which may include DECIMALS!!

Variables
16
Variables A science experiment has three kinds of variables.
• Independent variable – The factor that changes in an experiment • Dependent variable – What is being measured in an experiment • Control variable – The factor that remains constant in an experiment

If (IV) then (DV) because….
For each of the following problem statements, identify the IV, DV, and constants. Then write a hypothesis. Remember the following format: If…(IV goes here), Then…(DV goes here), Because… How does studying with music affect student test scores? Independent Variable: __________________________________________ Dependant Variable: __________________________________________ Constants: __________________________________________ Hypothesis: If a student studies while listening to music, then their test scores will _____________________ because ________________________ ______________________________________________________________

If (IV) then (DV) because….
For each of the following problem statements, identify the IV, DV, and constants. Then write a hypothesis. Remember the following format: If…(IV goes here), Then…(DV goes here), Because… How does studying with music affect student test scores? Independent Variable: Studying while listening to music Dependant Variable: The test score Constants: The person studying, the class Hypothesis: If a student studies while listening to music, then their test scores will increase because studying with music helps increase attention, memory, and ability to do problems mentally.

Practice How does use of an organized binder the amount of homework a student turns in? Independent Variable: __________________________________________ Dependant Variable: __________________________________________ Constants: __________________________________________ Hypothesis: If ______________________________________________________, then _______________________________________________________________ because ____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________.

Practice How does use of an organized binder impact the amount of homework a student turns in? Independent Variable: Organized Binder Dependant Variable: Amount of work turned in Constants: The student, the subject Hypothesis: If a student uses an organized binder for classes, then the amount of worked turned in will increase Because the student will have a section for each classes assignments to be placed.
