1 MAV MARK Jared investigated chemical reactions
based on smell, color change, and release of bubbles. What type of evidence would support any conclusion Jared makes? F. An observation G. An estimation H. A calculation J. A measurement

2 Scientific Lab Equipment

3 graduated cylinder (graduate)
To measure volume of liquids accurately

4 Flask The function of a flask is to hold and store liquids. Flasks are good for mixing substances with little or no spillage.

5 Metric Ruler To measure the lengths of solid objects accurately

6 Triple Beam Balance The function of a triple beam balance is to measure the mass of objects.

7 oC thermometer To measure temperature accurately

8 Microscope Microscopes can magnify usually between 40 times to 1000 times, depending on the brand and model of the microscope used.

9 Stereoscopic Microscope
Gives a three dimensional view of an object. (Examples: insects and leaves)

10 Microscope Slide The microscope slide is a flat piece of glass used for viewing objects under the microscope.

11 Petri Dish A petri dish is a flat dish made of plastic or glass with a cover that is primarily used to grow bacteria.

12 magnifying glass (hand lens)
To make objects appear larger than they are

13 Gloves Gloves are used to protect your hands. Some gloves protect against temperature extremes while others serve as a barrier against harmful substances.

14 Thermometer The thermometer is an instrument used for determining temperature.

15 Bunsen burner To heat substances (with a flame)

16 Hot Plate The function of a hotplate is obvious. Hotplates are used to heat substances.

17 To heat substances using electricity, not a flame.
hot plate To heat substances using electricity, not a flame.

18 Lighter These strikers are used to light lab burners.
The flints on strikers are expensive. Do not operate the striker repeatedly just to see the sparks!

19 ring stand with clamp and ring
To hold containers away from a heat source (such as fire) during an experiment

20 Ringstands and their Components Ring Clamp
Ring clamps connect to a ringstand, and provide a stable, elevated platform for a beaker to be heated. Will also hold a clay triangle and funnel during filtering.

21 Ringstands and their Components Wire Gauze
Wire gauze sits on the iron ring to provide a place to stand a beaker. On older wire gauze, the white material was asbestos – currently it is a ceramic.

22

23 test tube To hold liquids and chemicals during experiments (investigations)

24 test tube holder To hold test tubes over heat or away from your body

25 Disposable pipet To drop small amount of liquids

26 forceps To pick up small items that you should not touch

27 Erlenmeyer flask To hold liquids NOT used to measure accurately

28 beaker To hold, pour, or estimate liquids
NOT used to measure substances accurately

29 Funnel To pour liquids from one container to another without spilling anything

30 stirring rod To mix chemicals and hot liquids together (like a spoon)

31 The stirring rod is used to: a) manually stir solutions; b) assist in pouring liquids; and c) to transfer a single drop of a solution. Rubber policeman tip is used to remove precipitates. Stirring Rod Stir with this end.

32

33 Spatula Spatulas are used to dispense solid chemicals from their containers. Chemicals should never be transferred with your bare hands.

34 tongs To pick up large objects that you should not touch (e.g., hot containers, flasks of acids, etc.)

35 safety goggles To protect eyes against burns or cuts

36 test tube brush To clean the insides of test tubes after investigations

37 test tube rack To hold test tubes during an investigation. (After cleaning, test tubes can be placed upside down to dry.)

38 Well Plate: small scale reactions

39 Broken Glass Box and Trash Can
Broken Glass box to dispose of any broken glass, instead of the trash can. Trash Can to dispose of paper waste only!

40 Wash Bottle A wash bottle has a spout that delivers a water stream to a specific area. Distilled water is the only liquid that should be used in a wash bottle Distilled Water NEVER squirt water at another student!!!

41 Eyewash Station Push this handle to turn on the water – it will stay on until you pull it to turn off. Flush your eyes for minutes!

42 Safety Shower Lots of water will come pouring out here to rinse chemicals spilled on you. This is the handle to pull to activate the safety shower.

43 Eyewash Bottle and Fire Extinguisher
Fire Extinguishers

44 Lab Equipment-Review Uses.ppt
Congratulations! Now that you’ve learned the names and uses of these pieces of lab equipment, you are almost ready to work in the laboratory!
