Prefixes The metric system uses base units (such as meter, liter, and gram) and adds prefixes to these. The three prefixes you must know are: Kilo- (k)-means that there are 1,000 base units. (base unit x 1,000) Centi- (c)-this is 1/100th of a base unit. (base unit ÷ 100) Milli- (m)-this is 1/1,000th of a base unit. (base unit ÷ 1,000)

Length The basic unit of length in the metric system is the meter and is represented by a lowercase m. Tool used to measure length = meter stick

Mass Mass refers to the amount of matter in an object. The base unit of mass in the metric system is the gram and is represented by g. Tool used to measure mass = balance scale

Volume Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. The base unit of volume in the metric system is the liter and is represented by L. We can measure the volume of a regular object using the formula: length x width x height Tool used to measure volume = graduated cylinder

Temperature The unit of temperature in the metric system is Celsius and is represented by °C.

The chart at the bottom of the paper is for the Metric Olympics that everyone will compete in next Wednesday!

Index Card -put your name on one side -flip it over -number 1-10

Practice tasks Practice making the following measurements. Be sure to record your data on your index card. 1. Height of your desk chair. 2. Length and width of the science textbook. 3. Find the height of one of the books cases in the room. 4. Volume of red water. POUR CAREFULLY! WHEN YOU ARE DONE MEASURING POUR THE WATER BACK INTO THE BEAKER FOR THE NEXT GROUP! 5. Your height, then your wingspan (fingertip to fingertip). 6. The weight of your group’s pencils. 7. The weight of the paper clips. 8. Volume of green water. POUR CAREFULLY! WHEN YOU ARE DONE MEASURING POUR THE WATER BACK INTO THE BEAKER FOR THE NEXT GROUP! 9. The temperature of the classroom. 10. Volume of blue water. POUR CAREFULLY! WHEN YOU ARE DONE MEASURING POUR THE WATER BACK INTO THE BEAKER FOR THE NEXT GROUP!
