Bellwork – 8/15/17 Write down your Homework. Title a piece of notebook paper: Ch 1: Anatomical Terminology Read pg 15: The Language of Anatomy and Anatomical position. Stop at Directional Terms. Describe anatomical position and explain why it is necessary to have this standardized position.
2
Agenda 8/15/17 Basic Anatomical Terminology HW: Anatomical Practice
3
Essential Question Learning Goal
What is the universal scientific terminology to discuss the parts and location of organs in the human body and why is it important? I will be able to identify the proper relative positions, body cavities and anatomical terms used to describe the human body and organs.

Gross Anatomy – An Introduction
Figure 1.3
5
Identify 4 things wrong with this picture.
6
Directional Terms: Anterior/Ventral- toward the front
Posterior/Dorsal- toward the back
7
Superior- above, closer to the head
Inferior- below, closer to the feet
8
Lateral- Toward the side with respect to the midline
Medial- toward the midline
9
For appendages only! Proximal- closer to the trunk (point of attachment) Distal- further from the trunk (Point of attachment)

Lets try it! White Boards
The wrist is ________ to the hand. The sternum is ________ to the vertebrae. The brain is ________ to the spinal cord. The heart is ___________ to the lungs. The skin is _____________ to the bones. proximal anterior superior Use whiteboards and have students quickly write down their responses and hold up their answers to do a quick check to make sure they are understanding these terms. medial superficial

Body Cavities You have 10 minutes to read and complete activity #8 Handout. Give students about 10 minutes to read the worksheet and complete. Then review with net 3 slides.

Anatomical Terms Stand up
Follow me. Do what I do. This WILL help you learn the anatomical terms for the body. Have students stand up so you can see them. May want to take in hallway. Use page to call out parts of the body and have students point to them. First call out scientific terms and have them touch their body parts. Be cautious with inguinal, pelvic and pubic. I have students describe these areas. Then you point to place on your body and have them call them out. I mi it up and repeat every 5 terms to help them.
20
Your turn… Practice!

Essential Question Learning Goal
What is the universal scientific terminology to discuss the parts and location of organs in the human body and why is it important? I will be able to identify and demonstrate the proper body planes and sections used to separate body regions.

Exit Ticket Using what you have learned in class today answer the following IN COMPLETE SENTENCES: 1. If you wanted to separate the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity of a cadaver (a dead person) which type of a cut would you make? 2. Which kind of cut would separate the brain into anterior and posterior parts? 3. How would you rate today’s lesson if you have to give it a grade? Why? 4. What other questions do you have from today’s lesson?
