Started as a local issue and grew…
Institutional embarrassment and mistrust; Led to a task-force appointed by the President of the University; CAPS not involved initially. Student Life is in the crosshairs…

One bit of good news Opportunity!!! In good standing with nearly everyone in the situation – except the Dean’s Office, and now we’re in a position to help the community. Invited to the party by the task force…Had a voice on all of these things (and more).

What are the key issues? Caveats: Broad response – there are aspects of this that we won’t talk about today. Focusing on CAPS’ involvement in outreach. This is not the only major issue, but we’re focusing on this one today. Victims of Sexual Assault re-victimized by the Honor Code investigation process Institutional defensiveness Lack of quantifiable data # of Rape Kits actually tested in Utah One of the highest concentrated areas of sexual assault BYU and church punishments Local Law enforcement agencies Broader issue of sexual assault on campus

Enrolling Stakeholders
Finding advocates: Nursing professor (asked to lead task force); data College of Family, Home and Social Sciences Community partners (where they are going for help) Department of Athletics BYUPD

Who are the key players? Ecclesiastical leaders Family members
University faculty and staff Dean of Students Office Upper-level University Administration Title IX Office shift People students are most likely to reach out to. Students report going to these people. Many times with poor outcome.
