Presentation on theme: "QUESTIONS Complete the following table about metals."— Presentation transcript:

1 QUESTIONS Complete the following table about metals.
Definition of a ferrous metal Ferrous metals contain iron Rust or not Will Rust  Give three (3) examples cast iron, mild steel, medium carbon steel, stainless steel, and high speed steel. Definition of a non ferrous metal These are metals that do not contain iron and therefore do not rust Rust or not Will not rust  Give three (3) examples   aluminium, duralumin, copper, zinc, brass, and tin.

2 QUESTIONS Describe briefly what an alloy is?
An alloy is a mixture of two or more elements, at least one of which is a metal. The mixing of elements often improves its properties

3 epoxy resin, urea-formaldehyde, polyester resin
QUESTIONS What are the names of the two (2) basic groups of plastic? Thermoplastic and Thermosetting plastic Complete this summary table about Thermosetting plastics? Definition of a thermosetting plastic Thermosetting plastics are generally strong and resistant to heat. Once formed into a shape they can not be re-shaped. Recyclable or Non Recyclable NON RECYCLABLE  Give four (3) examples   epoxy resin, urea-formaldehyde, polyester resin

4 QUESTIONS Name two (2) thermoplastics and give an use for each?
acrylic, ABS, polystyrene and polythene

5 Properties Of Materials.
Physical properties – refer to the chemical or atomic make up of the material, i.e. how well it conducts heat or electricity. (natural) +- Mechanical properties – associated with how the material reacts when subjected to external forces.

6 Mechanical Properties.
Tensile strength – ability to withstand pulling or stretching. Compressive strength – ability to withstand pushing (squashing forces). Shear strength – ability to withstand forces trying to cut the material in two. Torsional strength – ability to withstand twisting or rotary forces. Bending strength – ability to resist bending forces.

7 The Apprentice Task In Groups of 2, research on the internet definitions of the following 2 mechanical properties. (5 groups of 3) (Scribe, researcher, teacher) Get: a definition Get a diagram or picture if possible to visualise the property. Get: examples of 2 different materials (e.g. one ductile, one not very ductile). You Must present your information to the other groups.

8 The Apprentice Task Fill in the 5 Blank Properties.
Fill in the 5 Blank Definitions

9 Mechanical Properties.
H _ _ _ _ _ _ – the ability to withstand indentation or scratching. T _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _– how well it can withstand impact forces. B _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ – poor ability to withstand impact forces. D _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ – the ability to be permanently deformed by cold working, i.e. wire drawing. (plasticity) M _ _ _ _ _ _ _ – the ability to be hammered or forged into shape. (plasticity)

10 Mechanical Properties.
Machineability – Elasticity – the ability to r _ _ _ _ _ to its original shape after the force has been removed. Plasticity – the ability to change its s_ _ _ _ or f _ _ _ when a force is applied; without fracturing. Durability – the ability to resist d _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. over a period of time, i.e. corrosion (rusting). Stability – ability to resist changes in s_ _ _ _ and s _ _ _ over time. Sometimes materials warp or deform when a force is applied permanently, this is known as C_ _ _ _.
