3. Research Findings
Vocabulary knowledge in kindergarten and first grade is a significant predictor of reading comprehension in the middle and secondary grades.
The vocabulary deficit begins early for some children of poverty.
Teaching vocabulary can improve reading comprehension for both native English speakers and English learners.
The average child enters school with a very small reading vocabulary, but it grows at the rate of 3,000-4,000 words per year.
Growing up in poverty can seriously restrict the vocabulary children learn before school and make attaining an adequate vocabulary a challenging task

4. If students were to learn two new words per period in an eight period school day, they would be responsible for learning 16 new vocabulary words each day. In a matter of one week, students would be expected to learn 80 new words!

5. How do we help students accomplish that?
Students learn the meaning of most words indirectly, through everyday experiences with oral and written language.
Some vocabulary should be taught directly by engaging in oral language, listening to adults read to them and reading extensively on their own.
