Academic Language Autobiographical Narrative Essay

2 Essential Question: What academic language do I need to learn to complete the task successfully?

3 An account (story) of a person’s life written by that person.
autobiography An account (story) of a person’s life written by that person. Anyone who writes a story about their own life, that story would be an autobiography.

4 Narrative A story or account of events, experiences, or the like, whether true or fictitious (not true).

5 Essay An essay is an analytic or interpretive composition. In other words, an essay is a piece of writing that examines a topic and explains the details of the topic.

6 Essay You may recognize the formats below as types you have used to help you write an essay.

7 Style (depending on the genre/type of writing)
Writing conventions Spelling Punctuation Capitalization Grammar Paragraphing Style (depending on the genre/type of writing)

8 Writing conventions Conventions should be taken very seriously.
Misspellings could make a reader not take the writing seriously and maybe even lose interest in continuing. Incorrect or a lack of proper punctuation could bring confusion. Capitalization helps make the reader aware of when a new sentence starts. A lack of capitalization could also make a sentence seem like a run-on. Paragraphing helps reinforce organization.

9 essential When something is essential it is absolutely necessary; extremely important.

10 Concrete sensory details
000 Concrete means specific (exact), solid Sensory means relating to any of the senses. Details – facts, information, features Does the following sentence include concrete sensory details? The car chase was exciting. What concrete sensory details could be added to the sentence to help a reader visualize, hear and see what happened during the car chase? Write the car chase sentence on the board. Start to re-write the sentence and model for students a few concrete sensory details that could be added to make the sentence more exciting/engaging. Then have students give input on what other details could be added. Use students’ input to finish rewriting the sentence with concrete sensory details. (Students will work in groups on the next slide doing the same activity.)

11 How does it sound? How does it taste? What does it look like?
Each group will write a description of popcorn using concrete sensory Details. Let’s see which group can create the best description that will have the class craving popcorn. What does it look like? What does is feel like? How does it sound? There will be a list of adjectives for this activity. You can make a class set so each group will have it for a cheat sheet to help with this activity. How does it taste? How does it smell?

12 Introduction introduce the reader to the subject matter you are writing about and to state the intent of the paper. Read more :

13 What makes a good introduction?
One way to create an interesting introduction is to, “…hint at or even reveal the climax of [your] story. If you reveal that you[will be unconscious in the hospital] by the end of the story, then not only will the reader want to find out how you [wind up] that way, your … actions [in the story] will also become more immediately meaningful since the reader can see how each action pushes … [you] closer to the end. For example, taking an elevator isn't an interesting action in itself, but it can be if you know that the elevator will lead [to you being unconscious in the hospital.] Read more :

14 Another type of introduction that will interest your reader…
Introduce the conflict that is at the heart of the narrative. Conflict allows readers to see what a character is made of and people naturally root for a character that is facing trouble. So show the reader what your character is up against immediately, and your reader will be rooting for the character throughout the rest of the narrative. Read more :

15 tells the story. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end.
Body tells the story. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end.

16 Dialogue Talking The statements that are said by the characters in a story, movie, play, etc. A conversation between two or more people Dialogue, when used correctly in your narrative writing, can bring your personal experiences to life for your readers.

19 Sequence a series of events or actions that are arranged or happening in a specific order. Chronological sequence is the order in time in which events happened If you want and you have time, I attached to this ppt a sample story that you could pre cut for your students and have them try to put it back together in the correct sequence/order.

20 Character Traits Character traits are all the aspects (features, characteristics) of a person’s behavior and attitudes that make up that person’s personality.
