Lesson objectives • L01 you will understand what a risk / risk assessment is. • L02 you will learn the risks associated with participation in physical activities. • L03 you will understand the ways that you can reduce the risks giving sporting examples.

What is a risk ? A risk assessment is …
•Something that can be dangerous to you. A risk assessment is … A way of identifying and controlling hazards within a physical activity. Undertaking risk assessments demonstrates commitment and duty of care.

Methods to reduce risks …
Warming up/ cooling down Checking equipment and facilities Correct clothing & footwear Balanced competition

Warming up/ cooling down
Warming up Helps to prevent injury whilst performing. Cooling down helps to reduce the build up of lactic acid which helps to prevent soreness and aches.

Checking equipment and facilities
Who normally checks the equipment/facilities ? Organisers Officials For example : Before a football match , officials must check that the pitch is suitable to play on and that the markings are clearly visible.

Protective equipment and clothing
Certain sports such as : Rugby, hockey, skiing and horse riding. The clothing may vary according to the sport you play. E.g. hockey goalkeepers wear more protective clothing Their positions are more vulnerable to being hit. Jewellery should be removed for all activities. Footwear Specialist shoes or boots. Sprinters need spikes to help them improve their performance. Road runners need protective shoes to help prevent injury on their knees.

Task In your pairs write down your sport and list the equipment that you need to wear.

Balanced competition When creating a balanced and fair competition numerous factors need to be considered. Age: People think that too much competition for young children is bad for them. Overuse injuries are common amongst young performers. Weight categories : Weight lifting Is divided into weight divisions but not for safety – for it to be fair. Boxing – matched according to their weight as well as ability. mixed/single sex : Especially in contact sports such as netball,hockey,football,cricket and rugby. For health and safety. Racket games such as tennis, badminton and table tennis can be played mixed gender. Wouldn't be fair

E.G Running on the roads Injury to knees/ ankles and hip joints. Protective clothing & footwear. Wearing protective footwear that help support these joints. Balanced competition Checking equipment/ facilities Warming up/cooling down.
