Muscular System
2
Learning Scale 4 – Research infectious agents and how the body systems work together to fight the infection and maintain homeostasis. 3 – Understand the general functions of the body systems and how infectious agents may affect the systems. Identify ways the body systems interact to maintain homeostasis. 2 – Explain the term homeostasis. Describe each body system. 1 – Identify body systems.
3
Functions of the Muscular System
Movement Protection Stability Temperature Regulation
4
Think Pair Share How does the muscular system increase your body temperature?
5
Types of Muscles Involuntary Muscles – not under conscious control (breathing, heartbeat) Voluntary Muscles – are under conscious control (smiling, standing)
6
Think Pair Share How can you differentiate between involuntary and voluntary muscles?
7
Specialized Muscle Tissue
Skeletal (Striated) Muscles Attached to the bones Moves bones Voluntary Tire quickly Smooth Muscles Inside many internal organs Involuntary Cardiac Muscles In heart
8
Connectors Tendons – attach muscle to bone Ligaments – attach bone to bone.
9
Muscles at Work Because muscles can only contract, not extend, skeletal muscles must work in pairs. While one contracts, the other muscle relaxes.
10
Think Pair Share Bend and straighten you arm. How does this movement prove that muscles work in pairs?
11
Healthy Muscles Exercise builds strength.
Stretching builds flexibility and helps prepare muscles for exercise. Muscles can become sore due to a build up of lactic acid in the muscle tissue. Muscle cramps occur when the entire muscle contracts and stays contracted.
12
The Muscular System & Homeostasis
Muscles help maintain body temperature by contracting and relaxing. When you exercise, your cardiac muscles (heart) help maintain homeostasis by contracting more often to pump oxygen throughout the body.
13
Think Pair Share How does his heart muscle help him get the oxygen his cells need to maintain homeostasis?
