Photosynthesis Notes Take out a sheet of paper!

4 Describe Photosynthesis
The process of changing light energy to chemical energy which is stored as sugar Occurs in plants and some algae Plants need sunlight, CO2, and H2O as REACTANTS Describe Photosynthesis

5 Occurs in the ____________of plants
___________is the green pigment inside chloroplasts that absorb sunlight chloroplasts Chlorophyll

6 As the chlorophyll in leaves decays in the autumn, the green color fades and is replaced by the oranges and reds of carotenoids.

CO₂ O₂ H₂O Glucose CHLOROPLASTS. Performs photosynthesis. It will take water and carbon dioxide, and change it in to oxygen & glucose… it’s a very simple process. Click to return to main page

8 (What is needed or Taken in) (What is created/produced)
H2O Water Reactants CO2 Carbon Dioxide Light NADP+ ADP + P ATP NADPH (What is created/produced) Chloroplast C6H12O6 Glucose O2 Oxygen Products

9 The Photosynthesis Song

10 Photosynthesis: Photosynthesis is the process by which the energy of sunlight is converted into the energy of glucose. carbon dioxide + water + light glucose + oxygen 6CO H2O + light C6H12O O2

11 What happens during photosynthesis?
Sunlight provides the energy needed to change carbon dioxide and water into glucose Oxygen is released as a waste What happens during photosynthesis?

12 What happens during photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide enters the leaf through holes called stomata CO2 combines with the stored energy in the chloroplasts through a chemical reaction to make glucose The sugar is moved through tubes in the leaf to the roots, stems and fruits of the plants Some of the sugar is used right away by the plant for energy; some is stored as starch; and some is built into plant tissue

13 Why is this important to us?
Without photosynthesis, plants wouldn’t exist. We cannot make our own food (glucose, energy), we must get our food from plants. The oxygen released is necessary for ALL living things. Remember: Producers/Plants are the base of the food chain! Why is this important to us?

14 Water, Sunlight, Carbon Dioxide
How do we build an equation for photosynthesis? What do plants (chloroplasts in the cells) need? What do plants create? Which side of the equation are the reactants? Which side of the equation are the products? Equation/ Formula: Water, Sunlight, Carbon Dioxide Glucose, Oxygen Left of the arrow Right of the arrow

15 Photosynthesis Write an equation for photosynthesis
____ + ____ + ____ ____ + ____ Photosynthesis 6H2O + 6CO2 + sunlight C6H12O6 + 6O2 Water + Carbon Dioxide + sunlight Glucose + Oxygen REACTANTS PRODUCTS Now label which side are the PRODUCTS & REACTANTS!

23 Mind Stretcher 12-13-16 Cellular Respiration
How do animals get ENERGY from the food they eat? Mind Stretcher Cellular Respiration

24 Cellular Respiration Notes
Take out a sheet of paper!

25 What is Cellular Respiration?
Organisms take in oxygen and break down sugar molecules releasing ATP energy, carbon dioxide, and water. The release of chemical energy for use by cells.

26 Who performs Cellular Respiration?
All living things perform cellular respiration! (Even plants!) Inside each cell, the MITOCHONDRIA breakdown glucose molecules to release ATP energy Who performs Cellular Respiration?

27 Building the equation…
How do we build the equation for cellular respiration? What do mitochondria need? What do mitochondria create? Which side of the equation are the reactants? Which side of the equation are the products? Building the equation… Glucose, Oxygen ATP energy, Water, Carbon Dioxide Left of the arrow Right of the arrow

28 Respiration Equation/ Formula
Write the equation for respiration in words and in molecular form: ____ + ____ ____ + ___ + ____ Respiration Equation/ Formula C6H12O6 + 6O2 6H2O + 6CO2 + ATP energy Glucose + Oxygen Water + Carbon dioxide + ATP energy REACTANTS PRODUCTS Now label which side are the PRODUCTS & REACTANTS! 1 molecule of sugar + 6 molecules of oxygen= 6 molecules of water + 6 molecules of carbon dioxide+ ATP energy!

32 Summary to add to Notes:
The reactants (what a plant needs) of photosynthesis are the products of respiration. The reactants of respiration are the products (what is made) of photosynthesis! They are OPPOSITE equations!!

33 What happens if your cells don’t have enough oxygen to perform respiration??

34 Have you ever felt a burning sensation in your leg muscles while you were running? When muscle cells can’t get the oxygen needed for cellular respiration, they use the process of fermentation to get energy. One kind of fermentation happens in your muscles and produces lactic acid. The buildup of lactic acid contributes to muscle fatigue and causes a burning sensation. This kind of fermentation also happens in the muscle cells of other animals and in some fungi and bacteria. Another type of fermentation occurs in some types of bacteria and in yeast. Fermentation

35 Fermentation is a way that cells get energy from food without using oxygen.
Causes lactic acid to build up Lactic acid build up causes muscle fatigue and causes a burning sensation Makes LESS energy than Cellular Respiration Fermentation in YEAST is what causes bread to rise! Fermentation- Recap
