Infection: invasion of the body by pathogenic microorganisms Antibiotic Ointment: an agent that inhibits bacterial growth or kills bacteria

6 Proper Wound Care GOAL: Control Bleeding and limit exposure to infection Antiseptic wipes Soap Water SUPPLIES NEEDED: Depending on the wound you might need: Steri-Strips Sutures Neosporin/Antibiotic Ointment Gauze Gloves Non-Stick Sterile Gauze Band-Aids Coverall

7 Types of Bleeding Explain that depending the type of injury/bleeding the treatment is going to vary Arteries – might need more pressure and further medical care; veins – pressure but likely to stop on its own soon; capillaries – pressure but usually ok within a few minutes medicpatriot.blogspot.com

9 With your partner… On your handout titled “Wound Care Maintenance” please complete the questions based on Scenario A Scenario A: A cross country runner was on his way back from his daily run and he slipped on a rock. The rock ended up slicing the lateral aspect of his RIGHT lower leg from the ankle to the knee causing a deep cut in the middle of the leg. He finishes running to the athletic training room with a lot of blood dripping down his leg and onto the floor. DEEP

11 On Your Own Finish Scenarios B – E
Get a stamp for EACH one from ME as you complete them Once you have received all 4 stamps you may get with a partner and practice your skills for each scenario Scenarios: One partner acts out the scenario/explains it and is the injured party, the other partner is the first responder applying the first aid skills. Try not to help your partner. Injured party has a check list for grading the first responder Have me check EACH scenario as you finish it and receive a second stamp.
