Navajo Baskets And the constant change of culture

11 The Traditional Navajo Baskets.
White center of the wedding basket portrays either Mother Earth or the beginning of the life Black stepped terraces either clouds or mountains Red circular band either sunrays or a rainbow.

12 When did it start changing…
By adding figures and other images In the 1970s, traders encouraged native weavers to produce baskets that would appeal to buyers beyond the local Navajo market.

13 New additions.. Incorporating sacred images and designs inspired by the prayers and rituals of medicine men into their work. Depicting traditional stories or ceremonies.

14 Contemporary Baskets Abstarct: Artwork which takes liberties, altering for instance color and form. Total abstraction bears no trace of any reference to anything recognizable.

15 Illusionary: Intricate geometric patterns function like the “eye- dazzler” designs.

16 Collage: creatively bring together multiple images to make a more personal interpretation of some aspect of Navajo belief or culture.
