1 Practical Revision Strategies
55

2 Objectives To give you some practical strategies to help you to revise
To get you to think about HOW you are going to revise To help you to realise that there is not just ONE way for you to revise

3 Starter How do you revise? What does revision look like when you do it? Re-reading your notes over and over again is the LEAST effective form of revision In order to be effective your revision must be ‘active,’ in other words you have to do something with the material. But what?

4 Mind mapping

5 The End of Life What happens at a Christian Funeral?
Christian teachings about the Soul The Christian Church teaches that the soul is immortal (lives forever), makes a person unique, is invisible, affects how a person lives their life, is not physical, allows a person to relate to God, is housed by the body, can be in conflict with the body, as the body may want earthly desires, when the soulmay want to do what God desires What happens at a Christian Funeral? Bible Readings – Reflect ideas of the afterlife and Heaven Prayers – Said for the deceased and their family Eulogy – memories of the deceased person are shared Hymns – Sung during the service, chosen by the deceased or their family Eucharist – Reminds them of the death and resurrection of Jesus Committal – The body is cremated or committed to the earth Keywords Committal – The actions that take place when a body is buried or cremated Day of Judgement – The day when God will Judge everyone according to their actions and faith on earth Eulogy – The speech or talk given at a funeral about the person who has died Funeral – The ceremony that takes place when a person dies Heaven – Place of paradise where God reigns and where the soul goes if it is free from sin Hell – Believed by some Christians to be a place of punishment for souls that are not free from sin; place of torment and suffering without God Judge – The Christian idea of God acting as a judge to determine whether a person goes to Heaven or Hell after death Purgatory – In some Christian traditions, a condition or state in which good souls receive spiritual cleansing after death, in preparation for Heaven Redemption – The idea that sins can be forgiven, because Jesus died for the sins of the world. He is often referred to as the redeemer How do funerals support the bereaved? funeral acknowledges that the person is gone the bereaved draw comfort from each other funeral is a chance to share emotions and loss bereaved can gain some closure and move on The End of Life Key Quotes for this topic The Parable of the Sheep and the Goats (Matthew 25) Revelation 21:4 ‘I believe in the resurrection of the body’ (The Apostles’ Creed) Death of the Body Soul lives on and goes on to… JUDGEMENT by God All souls are judged on their actions and faith Heaven, Hell or Purgatory If Purgatory, Heaven will eventually be reached Christians believe that only God has the necessary qualities to be the perfect judge

6 Mind mapping Computer (1 slide) or hand-drawn
One colour = one section of information Great for – Summarising a topic (e.g. Religion and Family Relationships). Presenting lots of information in a condensed way Allows you to be creative/expressive Take a photo and share it with your mates!

7 Mnemonics Mnemonics are when we use the key parts of a list of things we need to remember and we create a story or phrase using these things Great for – Remember lists of information/Things in order For example, for your RE exam you need to remember what takes place during a Catholic funeral (see next slide)

8 Mnemonics Welcome Readings from the Bible W R B P Prayers H C
Holy Communion Eulogy Final Commendation (Holy Water and Incense) Burial or Cremation W R B P H C E FC H W and I) B C Try to write a mnemonic to help us remember these

9 Mnemonics When Rooney Battered (the ball) Past The Hammer’s Ceeper
Everyone Felt (Crazily) He’d Won It Bloody Cup! W RB P HC E FCHWI BC

10 Note-taking Should not be ‘copying-up’ work that you have already done
Should be a case of condensing work that has already taken place into shorter, simpler, easier to remember pieces of information Great for – when you have huge amounts of information to remember in subjects like History, RE, Science
