1 ST. FRANCIS CATHOLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL, IDIMU
ST. FRANCIS CATHOLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL, IDIMU. 2018/2019 UNIVERSITY ADMISSION WORKSHOP FOR SS 3 STUDENTS ADMISSION INTO NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES – PROSPECTS, PROBLEMS, POLITICS AND CHALLENGES

2 PURPOSE OF UNIVERSITY EDUCATION
Two broad motives of University Education: Intrinsic Motive: what I love, cherish, my passion, the fulfilment I get from doing it, what I think I will contribute from it, etc. Extrinsic Motive: what will be my gain, what do I stand to get, will it give me something good in return, etc For intrinsic motivation those days, people were very happy to read Classics, History, Anthropology, Archeology, Botany, etc, simply for the love of the satisfaction they gain from it. REASONS FOR MORE EMPHASIS ON EXTRINSIC MOTIVES: 1. Family Line: issues bothering on family choices eg, the father is a Lawyer, Doctor, Engineer, the mother is a Nurse and would want their children to toe their line of profession. 2. Economic/Job opportunity consideration Family Pride/Prestige For the defense of the family Career prospects and future development

3 QUALIFYING SUBJECTS FOR THE CHOSEN COURSE AND UTM EXAMINATION
General Requirements: Every candidate must possess five credit passes in SSCE (WAEC/NECO) which must include English Language and Mathematics and other three subjects RELEVANT to the course of choice. SPECIFIC FACULTY/DEPARTMENTAL REQUIREMENT: For Medicals: - Biology, Chemistry, Health Science, Physics (for pharmacy) Engineering: - Chemistry, Physics, Technical Drawing, Further Maths Sciences: Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Further Maths., T/D, Geo. Business/Finance/Accounting: Economics, Commerce, Financial Accounting, Government, Geography Law/Theatre/Mass Comm, etc:- Literature in English, Christian Religious Studies, Government, Economics, Civic Education, Geography, etc. Please note: Before deciding on a course of study, visit the university or confirm the current departmental requirements as well as the UTME subjects. If you fail to do this, you may be screened out at the end.

4 PROBLEM OF SUBJECT SELETION IN WAEC/UTME SUBJECT COMBINATION
With the introduction of/and making Civic Education and Trade Subject compulsory, it has become very challenging for students to choose the right subject combinations to meet the general/departmental requirements in some universities. The major issue being that both subjects are not recognized by the universities as a pre-requisite subject for admission. What are the solutions? Candidates are advised to carefully go through each university admission requirements before making a choice. Candidates are advised to either change their courses or change the universities they already had in mind if their subjects/combinations do not give them the necessary advantage Candidates must ensure that the right UTME combinations are chosen to avoid last minute screening-out. Some universities require Further Maths and Technical Drawing as compulsory for any Engineering course, please watch out for this. Some universities require Government for you to study Accounting, please watch out for all these little problems, they matter a lot.

5 COMPUTER BASED TESTING - CBT
What is Computer Based Testing? It is a testing method in which the computer is used in asking and answering examination questions. This method replaces the paper and pencil method. A candidate is assigned a computer which has already been programmed and configured for the purpose. On keying in the candidate’s personal data for the examination, series of instructions are released which the candidate must follow. The candidates selects the registered subjects for the UTME and answers them based on the questions provided on the computer monitor (screen). Each candidate is timed automatically as shown on the computer and the examination must be completed within that time. At the end of the test, the candidate submits his/her answers to the questions via the computer on the provision for submission made. Where the time elapses before the candidate finishes answering the questions, the computer will automatically submit the answers for you. Note: This method requires speed and high level of accuracy and concentration. Results of the test may be released immediately or within a short time

8 FACTORS THAT DETERMINE COURSE CHOICE
Personal Interest Career Prospects Job opportunities Economic considerations Family preferences Areas of specialization in secondary school Sometimes WAEC/NECO result may affect the choice Some other times, frustration arising from delayed admission

9 FACTORS THAT DETERMINE UNIVERSITY CHOICE
Family choice Location of the University – urban, sub-urban or out of town Comparative advantage of the candidate over other candidates seeking the same course Availability of Course of choice Proximity especially for residents of Lagos Interest of the candidate Catchment area advantage Number of universities offering the course Other special considerations

10 COURSES OF CHOICE NEW/EMERGING COURSES
Apart from the traditional courses of Medicine, Pharmacy, Accountancy, Law, etc, there are other courses which are gradually gaining ground and acceptability. Most of these courses provide ready answers to the high unemployment rate in the country. Some of these courses have been in existence but students have paid less attention to them hence they become somehow unpopular; these include: IN THE MEDICAL FIELD, THESE INCLUDE: Dentistry and Dental Surgery Nursing and Nursing Science Prosthesis and Orthopaedic Technology Public Health Technology Optometry Pharmacology Medical Biochemistry Radiography, Medical Records, Biomedical Technology Medical Laboratory Technology, etc

11 NEW AND EMERGING COURSES ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE RELATED COURSES
Chemical/Petrochemical Engineering Computer/communication Engineering Water Resources/ Environmental Engineering Petroleum and Gas Engineering Gas Engineering Food Science, Food Processing Technology Project Management Technology Communication and Wireless Technology Software Engineering Irrigation Engineering, etc Electronics/Computer Technology Telecommunication Science Telecommunication Engineering Physics with Electronics Physics and Computer/Electronics Physics with Solar Energy Physics /Astrology Genetics and Biotechnology Mechatronics Engineering Mechatronics/System Engineering Biotechnology and Renewable Energy Engineering

12 Other Emerging Courses in Administration and Humanities
Industrial Relations and human Resources Mgt Project Management Fine and Applied Arts Fine Art and Design Creative Arts Theatre and Film Studies French with German/Russia Business Economics International Studies and Diplomacy Film and Video Studies Mass Communication and Technology Political Science/International Law & Diplomacy

13 FACTORS THAT DETERMINE YOUR ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION
Performance in the UTME Performance in the Post UTME Test Performance in WAEC/NECO Examinations Course choice (level of competition) Number of universities offering the course Number of candidates who applied for the same course in the same university and their performances in the qualifying exams.

14 CONDITIONS THAT MAY NULIFY YOUR ADMISSION
Wrong choice of UTME Subject combination Inconsistency in your date of birth Inconsistency in your names including spelling Discrepancies in admission documents filed. Departmental requirements not in tandem with your qualifying subjects Please Note: Your name and date of birth must always tally with the contents of your birth certificate.

15 ACCREDITED COURSES It is very important for parents and students to know that certain professional courses enjoy dual accreditation; one by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the other by the affiliated professional body. Both accreditations are necessary before a university can graduate a student from that course. Our investigations have revealed that with NUC accreditation, a university can admit students in anticipation that the professional body accreditation may come before the year of graduation. If this fails to come, such undergraduates will remain in the university longer than the course duration. When this happens, out of frustration, a student may decide to change course or change university. Some of the professional courses involved in this category include: MEDICINE & SURGERY, DENTISTRY/DENTAL SURGERY, LAW, ACCOUNTANCY, ARCHITECTURE, etc. The implication of this information is that should any student enroll for any of these courses where full and final accreditation have not been done, he risks spending more time than is required for the course or he may be forced to change a course or university as the last resort.

16 EMERGING ISSUES ON ADMISSION: NEW ADMISSION FORMAT FROM 2017/2018
CAPS – [CENTRAL ADMISSION PROCESSING SYSTEMS Meaning and explanation Role of the Examination Body – JAMB Role of the Individual Universities Notice of offer of Admission by JAMB to candidates Candidates opportunity to accept/reject offer within 72 hours Placement of candidates in the MARKET PLACE Other issues connected with CAPS

17 BEFORE COMPLETING YOUR ADMISSION FORM:
Ensure that you have gone through the general instructions That you have fulfilled the university’s general and departmental requirements. That you are good enough in the UTME subject combinations. That you are sure of passing the departmental required subjects in your WAEC/NECO. That the information you are supplying is current and up-to-date. Please note: If you are not very sure of any of the above, it may be better for you to change your earlier chosen course to something you know you are sure of.

18 POST UTME ADMISSION SCREENING
Investigations have shown that when Post-UTME tests stopped last year, universities developed a format for the final selection of candidates for admission during that period. The screening format for almost all universities were basically the same in operation but with slight modifications in application based on individual university. The format looks like this: 1. Performance in the UTM Examination = 50% 2. Performance in SSCE (5 subjects needed) 50%

19 FINAL SELECTION CRITERIA CASE STUDY FOR EXPLANATION
Let us use University of Lagos as an example: 1. Course of Study: ELECT/ELECT 2. Admission requirements: Five O’Level credits in English, Mathematics, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry. Let us also assume that two candidates have applied for this this course and have scored the same marks in the UTME but differed in their performances in the SSCE results. The screening analysis will look like this:

20 Computation of Results
CANDIDATE A CANDIDATE B SSCE SUBJECTS GRADE SCORE POINT (UNI) SCORE POINT (UNI.) ENGLISH C4 7 B3 8 MATHEMATICS C5 6 A1 10 FURTHER MATHS. C6 5 B2 9 PHYSICS CHEMISTRY 33 POINTS 46 POINTS UTME SCORE = 240

21 EXPLANATION The Computation of the screening scores of the two candidates is based on the following assumptions: Both candidates scored 240 in the UTME Both candidates applied to study ELECT/ELECT. at University of Lagos. That Unilag is using the screening format of 50 – 50 (that is, conversion of performance in both UTME and required five subjects in SSCE over 50% each) That Unilag has adopted a 70% admission cut-off for ELECT/ELECT this session. Based on the above assumptions, the final screening points for both candidates will look like this:

22 FINAL DETERMINATION TABLE
CANDIDATE A UNIVERSITY SCORE POINT (50) CANDIDATE B UNIVERSITY SCORE POINT (50%) UTME SCORE 240 (240/400x50) 30 POINTS SSCE RESULT (FIVE REQUIRED SUBJECTS) 33 POINTS SSCE RESULT (FIVE REQUIRED SUBJECTS 46 POINTS 66 POINTS 76 POINTS

23 FINAL SCREENING RESULT
From the above analysis, it can be seen that candidate B stands a better chance of being admitted than candidate A even though both of them scored the same mark in the UTME. The implication of this is that good performance in both examinations is very essential and it is important for students to know this. Finally, making good grades in your SSCE subjects especially the five subjects required by the department in the university will play an important part in your final selection.

24 SELECTION PROCESS USING POST-UTME FORMAT
With the reintroduction of the Post-UTME tests, the method adopted will be of three folds: Performance in SSCE(WAEC/NECO) EXAM. Performance in the UTM Examination Performance in the Post-UTME test The scores in each category will be weighted over a particular average(SCORE POINTS)

25 SAMPLE OF CALCULATION USING THE THREE PARAMETRES (AN ASSUMPTION)
Let us use University of Benin as an example: 1. Let the Course of Study be Pharmacy 2. Admission requirements: 5 O’level credits in English, Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Physics Let us also assume that two candidates have applied for this course and have scored the same marks in the UTME but differed in their performances in SSCE and Post-UTME result. The screening analysis will look like this:

26 SELECTION ANALYSIS USING THE THREE PARAMETRES
1. Both Candidates scored 250 in the UTME 2. Both Candidates applied to Study Pharmacy at Uniben 3. That Uniben is conducting Post-UTME test. 4. That Uniben has adopted 40 – 30 – 30 format (ie UTME=40, SSCE=30, POST-UTME TEST =30) That Uniben has adopted 65% as admission cut-off for Pharmacy. Based on the above assumptions, the calculations will be thus:

27 Computation of Results
CANDIDATE A CANDIDATE B SSCE SUBJECTS GRADE SCORE POINT ENGLISH B2 5 C4 3 MATHEMATICS A1 6 C6 1 CHEMISTRY PHYSICS C5 2 BIOLOGY 28 POINTS 13 POINTS UTME SCORE 250 POST-UTME SCORE 75% 80%

28 FINAL DETERMINATION TABLE
CANDIDATE A UNIVERSITY POINTS OF CANDIDATE B UTME SCORE=250/400X40 25 SSCE SCORE (5 SUBJECTS) 28 13 POST-UTME=75/100X30 22.5 POST-UTME=80/100X30 24 75.5 62

29 CONCLUSION From the table above, it is clear that Candidate A, with 75.5% stands a brighter chance of gaining admission based on the 65% cut-off mark. The Implications of this are many: 1. It is very important to make good grades in the SSCE result (minimum of B3) 2. It is also very necessary to do well in both the UTME and the Post-UTME as each point counts

30 LOOKING FOR ADMISSION OUTSIDE NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES [UK/USA IN PARTICULAR]
For parents who may be interested in having their children study in UK or USA, there are certain examinations they may still need to write apart from the SSCE-WAEC/NECO, these include: IGCSE (Otherwise called Cambridge GCE) for schools in the UK SAT – Scholastic Aptitude Test/Scholastic Assessment Test) for USA ACT – American College Test for USA (a replica of UTME) TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language For us in St. Francis, this place is an IGCSE centre over the past five years. It is nor open to all because of the academic rigors and financial outlay. IGCSE is taken twice a year but here it is once in October/November, each year for selected SS 3 students. For SAT, ACT and TOEFL, some of our students who have taken part did so after the WAEC examinations due to the time it takes and the distance for tutorials. Any parent who is interested should let us know so that we can make the necessary contacts.
