1 Fourth Grade Newsletter
Dates to remember January 13 – 2 hr. early dismissal January 16 – No School January 19 – End of Quarter 2 January 27 – No School February 3 – Report Cards go home January Edition General Math We will be finishing our first fraction unit and testing around January 26th. The unit includes comparing, equivalence, adding, subtracting, and decomposing fractions and mixed numbers. Students will be measuring items to the nearest eighth of an inch. We’re also creating and interpreting line plots using whole numbers and fractions. Our next unit, beginning the end of January, is multiplying fractions and whole numbers. Reading News In reading this month, we are focusing on using text features (charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, web pages, etc.) to better comprehend text. Students will also be identifying the text structure (sequence, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution, description) of non-fiction pieces. They are finishing writing an opinion piece related to the articles they read about funding the exploration of Mars. They will be revising and editing these papers before writing their final draft. Accelerated Math In accelerated math we will be completing our unit on multiplying fractions by whole numbers. Our focus will be on solving multi-step word problems with visual models including strip diagrams and number lines. In addition, we will cover creating line plots to display and analyze large quantities of measurement data. Before the end of January we will be assessing their skills with the topic 5 post test.
