Chapter 9: Managing Local and Network Printers FINDING THE NAME OF THE SHARED PRINTER If you don’t know the name of the printer, you are given up to three search options: If the computer is a member of an Active Directory domain, you can use the Find A Printer In The Directory option Whether the computer is a member of a domain or a workgroup, you can select the type, select the printer name, or browse for a printer If the printer is configured to be accessible through a Web browser, you can select Connect To A Printer On The Internet Or On Your Intranet Discuss methods that can be used to find the name of a printer you don’t know. Class Question: How can you locate the printer when you have an idea of what print server the printer is attached to? How can you connect to the printer automatically using the Run option? Demonstrate using the Run option on the Start menu by entering the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path to the printer or the name of the print server that the printer is attached to.

Chapter 9: Managing Local and Network Printers TROUBLESHOOTING PRINTER RESOURCES Verify that the printer is plugged in and turned on Verify that the cabling connections are secure Make sure that there is paper in the paper trays Make sure that the printer is indicating an error of some sort Discuss printer resource problems (such as jobs being stuck in the print queue, not having enough space on the volume that contains the spool directory, a user being able to print but with garbled output, or pages emerging only partially printed) and ways to troubleshoot them (for example, by setting up access to multiple printers).
