1 Establishing Classroom Limits
I can explain the reasons for having classroom limits. I can list guidelines for establishing classroom limits I can describe methods for enforcing limits. I can list useful limits for various classroom areas and activities.

2 Why set Limits? So children can effectively work in groups
Promotes safety, responsibility, respect States the goals of the classroom Limits need to focus on behaviors Each center will need limits Teachers will explain and enforce the limits Limits need to be posted

3 Establishing Limits Children’s health and safety must be protected
Children feel free to explore when they know their teacher will stop them if they go to far. Limits help children develop self-control Children will learn that limits are a part of life. Limits help develop socially responsible behavior in young children.

4 Guidelines for Setting Limits
Short and positive Focus on one main point Short simple sentences Choose words that describe the behavior Avoid – be nice, stop it Limits are reasonable Give reasons for limits Avoid making to many limits Define both acceptable and unacceptable behavior Reexamine limits on a regular basis Get the kids involved in setting limits

Children feel secure when they know there are limits to protect them. (hitting) Flexible Limits Adapt to the needs of the individual child or the situation

9 Role Play Toby is in the book corner. While looking at a book, she accidentally tears a page. During a cooking activity, Mark accidentally spills his milk. Tommy goes down the slide. When he reaches the bottom, he continues to sit there. Sarah and Frank are on the seesaw. Suddenly, Sarah jumps off.
