FIRE FLASH
2
We think we need a better way
Facts on Fires 9% of Firefighters die because of a structural collapse in a burning building. Firefighters' equipment weighs a lot. A fireman's coat weighs 15 pounds. His boots and trousers weigh 30 pounds. The mask and air pack that a firefighter wears to ensure he has plenty of oxygen while fighting the fire weighs 30 pounds. In total, that is 75 pounds of equipment! Half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep. Only one in five home fires were reported during these hours. One quarter of home fire deaths were caused by fires that started in the bedroom. Another quarter resulted from fires in the living room, family room or den. Three out of five home fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. We think we need a better way to detect fires

Our Product Our product is called the Fire Flash.
We hope it will help firefighters and other industries. The Fire Flash will detect the temperature of a door, or air, and will beep loudly and flash if it is above a certain dangerous temperature We plan that it could be mounted on simple robots that can deliver the micro:bit to other places where humans cant go (small space, dangerous, etc.) and check the temperature within.

Original Ideas Of course our team tried our best, but dreams and reality cannot always connect. With the time, cost and technological limits we had to shelve a number of ideas. One of our first ideas was to take in some of the smoke from the fire and see what elements were in it, and how much lethal gas was there. We also investigated the possibility of detecting both Carbon Monoxide and Oxygen levels and giving a warning if these were out of the ordinary.

Developing Our Product
Once we settled on an idea we split into teams. One team worked on developing the Block Code required for our product to work. Another team worked on the design for the product itself – sketching designs and getting feedback. Our final team worked on ideas, our presentation and solving any problems we faced.

Costing for Fire Flash -£3.99
Component Costing Total Cost 3 colour LED £1.27 HIP (High Impact Polystyrene) £2.68 per sheet can make 6 molds per sheet £0.44p Crocodile leads £ used 1.29/10 = 12.9p x 7 = 90p £0.90 Thermistor £0.47 Resistor £0.91 We would ideally like to sell these for little more than they cost to make as we see them as a life saving device

Team Strengths “This team’s strengths are definitely teamwork and communication, the ingenuity is exceptional and they have a good chance of winning.” “Our team is very determined and clever, being able to overcome problems is also a good strength of ours.” “The team is very good and very well prepared to face issues, and is excellent in the term of teamwork.” “We all work well as a team and understand our individual strengths and can all pull together as a team.” “We are all really amazing and I love working with everyone. I think we make an excellent team!”

Our Problems Every team has their struggles and problems, and here is some of ours so far: Deciding how to help the firefighters Making the script Deciding jobs and duties But thanks to everyone’s determination, we pulled through all of these issues and all happily agree with our ideas.

Future Plans With investment we hope that we could develop a smaller version of our product – using techniques such as soldering – we don’t do this till Year 8! This would save on size as well as cost – making the Fire Flash easier to carry and store. We also hope with a bigger budget we could use more advanced sensors and make different versions of the Fire Flash such as a Carbon Monoxide tester. We have even investigated the idea of developing one which is water proof and could be used to test bath water and food for babies and the elderly.
