1 ARCIONS DATA: An Update!
Alaina Luzik Team Meeting 11 September 2008

2 A Brief Recap Focusing on 4 summer ARCIONS sites: Egbert, ON
Goose Bay, NF Sable Island, NS Yarmouth, NS Sites are colored in green: Goose Bay, Sable Island, Yarmouth and Egbert.

3 A Brief Recap Climatology of all sites except Goose Bay
Other sites were used in IONS 04 & IONS 06 Meteorological Conditions Analyzing daily conditions and seasonal anomalies to determine influences in ozone budgets Forest Fire Influence Compare smoke plume data and MODIS detected hotspots with HYSPLIT back trajectories

4 Ozone Budgets for Summer 2008

5 Ozone Budgets for Summer 2008

6 Solving the July 4 mystery
More ST influence than on two previous days (~10 DU) BL is 2 DU higher Very large ADV term (although it is lower the 7/3 and equal to 7/5). Date 703 BL 6 RCL 2 ST 10 ADV 32 Total 50 704 8 20 27 57 705 5 14 3 49

7 Solving the July 4 mystery (cont.)
All back trajectories pass through smoke plume between North Carolina and Maine on 7/4/08. 7

8 Conclusion Largest amount of ST influence that contributed to large TTOC value The large ADV term on 7/3 and 7/4 may have been partly caused by the forest fire plume (7/3 data was not shown). A lot more RCL & ADV at Yarmouth than Sable, but Sable has ~ 2xs the amount of ozone in the BL. Also, more ST influence at Sable.

9 What’s Next… Continue back trajectories & forest fire analysis
Digging deeper into TTOC trends from 04, 06 &08. Continue with met analysis for Possibly look into comparing anomalies between 04,06 & 08 and relating it to average ozone column values.
