Scientific Method: Writing Hypotheses
Learning Target : I understand that a hypothesis is a prediction of the outcome of the experiment. I know that a scientific hypothesis is written using the “IF/THEN” format.
2
Scientific Hypothesis
A hypothesis is a prediction of the outcome of the experiment. A hypothesis is based on research done on the topic of your question. A good hypothesis is written in the “If/Then” format. This format shows a cause and effect relationship between the independent and dependent variables.
3
“If/Then” Hypothesis When writing an “If/Then” hypothesis it should be modeled as such; If (describe a specific change made to the IV) Then (Describe what you think will happen to the DV)
4
Example Question: Which type of soil makes a tomato plant grow taller, sand or soil? IV: Type of Soil DV: Tomato Plant Height Hypothesis: If a tomato plant is planted in soil then it will grow taller.
5
Writing a Hypothesis Examples
Question: What is the effect of the number of books I read on my reading speed? IV: The number of books I read DV: Reading Speed Hypothesis: If I increase the number of books I read Then my reading speed will increase.
6
Writing a Hypothesis Examples
Question: What is the effect of the amount of light on plant growth? IV: Amount of Light DV: Plant Growth Hypothesis: If a plant is given more light Then it will grow taller.
7
Writing a Hypothesis Examples
Question: What is the effect of the type movie on heart rate? IV: Type of Movie DV: Heart Rate Hypothesis: If I watch a horror movie Then my heart rate will increase.
8
Writing a Hypothesis Examples
Question: How does temperature affect the rate of water evaporation? IV: Temperature DV: Rate of Water Evaporation Hypothesis: If the temperature increases Then water will evaporate faster.
9
Writing a Hypothesis Examples
Question: What is the effect of energy drinks on a persons heart rate? IV: Energy Drink DV: Persons Heart Rate Hypothesis: If I drink an energy drink Then my heart rate will increase.

Writing a Hypothesis Practice
Question: What is the effect of the color of light on a plants growth? IV: Color of Light DV: Plant Growth Hypothesis: If a plant is grown under a green light Then its growth will increase.
12
Writing a Hypothesis Practice
Question: What is the effect of an items weight on how fast it falls when dropped? IV: Items weight DV: Speed at which it falls Hypothesis: If the weight of an item increases Then it will fall at the same speed.
13
Writing a Hypothesis Practice
Question: How does the type of cup affect the temperature of the liquid in it? IV: Type of cup DV: Temperature of the liquid Hypothesis: If a hot liquid is poured into a coffee mug Then its temperature will stay hot longer.
14
Writing a Hypothesis Practice
Question: How does the type of show affect running speed? IV: Type of Shoe DV: Running Speed Hypothesis: If I wear running shoes Then my running speed will increase.
15
Writing a Hypothesis Practice
Question: What is the effect of the amount of salt on the boiling rate of water? IV: amount of salt DV: boiling rate of water Hypothesis: If the amount of salt added to water is increased Then it will boil faster.
16
Writing a Hypothesis Practice
Question: How does the type of soil affect a plants height? IV: Type of Soil DV: Plant Height Hypothesis: If a plant is grown in fertilized soil Then it will grow taller.
