What do you know about volcanoes?
10
Please look at the diagram below.
It shows a volcano erupting.
11
volcanic eruption Boiling rock erupts from the crater;
Ash cloud/volcanic ash Crater volcanic eruption Lava Boiling rock erupts from the crater; the lava flows slowly down the mountain. Magma chamber
12
More about the volcano 1. How is a volcano formed?
The rocks under the earth become hotter and hotter and erupt from the mountain.
13
Where is it most possible for a
volcano to erupt? Near the oceans.
14
3. What types of volcanoes do you know?
An extinct volcano A dormant volcano Haleakala Crater, the largest dormant volcano(休眠火山) in the world Maui, Hawaii An active volcano
15
The Kilauea volcano Let’s learn something about a famous volcano.
16
More information about Mount Kilauea
The Kilauea volcano More information about Mount Kilauea Mount Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. “Kilauea” means “spewing(喷涌)” or “much spreading”, apparently in reference to the lava flows that it erupts. Mount Kilauea in Hawaii has erupted 62 times in 245 years. The current eruption began in January 1983 and has been going on ever since.
17

Unit 5 Reading AN EXCITING JOB
22
Can you imagine climbing into a live volcano in order to measure the temperature of the boiling rock inside? Would you want to do such dangerous work?
23
Look at the questionnaire on page 33 and answer “yes” or “no” to these questions to find out if you would be suitable for this work. P33

A. the temperature is not very high B. no one lives near the top of the Mount Kilauea C. people know how to escape the rocks D. the buildings near the volcanoes are very firm
29
(6) How many scientists are driven up the mountain the next day?

(5) What does the writer find impressive about volcanoes even after studying them for many years? 4.Answer these questions using complete sentences.
34
Reference answers (1) Why is the lava that flows on Mount Kilauea more dangerous than the actual eruption? The lava flows down the mountain and can cover up or burn villages in its path. The rocks that erupt from the volcano usually don’t damage anything because no one lives near the crater.

(4)Why was it difficult for the writer to
walk towards the edge of the crater? The author was wearing special protective clothing that made it difficult to walk. (5)What does the writer find impressive about volcanoes even after studying them for many years? The writer finds their beauty and their potential to cause great damage very impressive.
