Event A Much of the modern Middle East, including southeastern Europe, most of North Africa, and some of the Arabian Peninsula. A religious group system. Allowed religious groups to govern themselves as long as taxes were paid to the sultan. It was effective, peacefully, for 100’s of years. As the European countries seeking power in the 1600’s began winning wars and taking over economic control, the empire began to decline. Some did not like the new ways and held on to Ottoman traditions. A new sultan rejected the reforms and returned to traditional Ottoman rule. This caused revolutionaries to rise up.
212
Event B A secret agreement between Britain and France to divide the empire into mandates (colonies). The Europeans felt the people in this area were not equipped to handle the modern world and needed to be guided. The Europeans created them without input from Arab leaders, they hand -picked the rulers. The Arabs resented European intervention. They felt they had been promised an independent Arab state.
213
Event C The Arabs responded by calling for unity and independence for all Arab people. Muslims felt this signified the end of an Islamic state that would defend the Islamic way of life. To force out the Europeans and choose leaders who would respect and protect the laws of Islam. The nationalists engage in demonstrations, boycotts, and writing campaigns against European powers.
214
Event D Zionism is Jewish nationalism focusing on creating a Jewish state in Palestine. Romans driving the Jews from Palestine into exile as well as reacting to violent attacks against Jewish communities in Russia. A declaration from British Officials. The declaration supported the creation of a Jewish national home in Palestine. The Arabs felt the declaration violated their rights. They felt their homeland was being given away. The peasants came from the farms of Palestine. The Jews that bought the land evicted them. They formed a mass of unemployed Arabs, angry at Jewish settlers and British government. Britain partitioned Palestine into a Jewish and Arab state. The Jews tentatively agreed while the Arabs completely opposed the plan. Violence increased. After WWII, Britain turned the issue over to the United Nations.
