All upper class children expected to read Boys entered into secondary schooling, girls were entering into marriage Women still viewed as inferior, until late second century (upper class women)

Could attend races, theatres, and other events Influenced politics through their husbands Romans carried and relied on a lot of slaves Came from all over Built roads, buildings, treated unfairly and horribly

Slave Revolts Revolts led to murders, and fear
Gladiator, Spartacus, leads most famous revolt in 73 b.c.e. 70,000 slaves Defeated several armies of Rome (revolting for 2 years)

Living Conditions Overcrowded, noisy city, dangerous
Rich lived in villas Poor lived in Insulaes- apartment blocks (poorly built and often collapsed) Temples, markets, baths, theaters gave Rome a magnificent look Entertainment value- races, plays, gladiatorial shows

Colosseum was most famous amphitheater Trained fighters (gladiators) mostly slaves “Beasts” sent into arena to face gladiators From dawn till dusk Gladiators had celebrity status Treated well Some fought for freedoms
